If they are. you lose one club« trick and make the contract; if, not, you lose two club tricks. and go down one. 7 However, this would be an. improper view to take. If you stop to think about the matter, it becomes evident that it is '\possible for the contract to be made even if the clubs are di-: vided 3-1. Once you realize this, . you naturally adapt your play to cover a 3-1 as well as a 2-2 division in clubs. You draw two. rounds of trumps, cash the A-K of hearts, and ruff a heart. I have gone on a strict diet for three months, but as soon as I take any small liberties the ulcers are right back. I am a Canadian but saw an article in the paper that ulcers 2 in the: United States. Is'this done in Canada? --G. A. W. I have no doubt that there aré doctors in Canada who use this technique, just as it is not limited to any one place in the United States. But before we get into that, let's first explain peptic ulcers and their nature. Peptic ulcers (stomach or duodenal) can vary greatly in severity. They may be acute yet in due time heal completely. Again they may be chronic, be- having placidly at times, then flaring up. It is not always easy to identify the exact factors involved. So for general policy, it's a good idea to regard the condi- tion as chronic, and to treat it-- and respect it--as such. | EFFORTS COMBINED Rarely does any single ele- ment of treatment achieve suc- cess, It takes a combination of diet, antacids or other medica- tion, emotional control, avoid- ance of undue fatigue, some- times other things. Certainly the average ulcer patient is tense and high-strung, and is his own worst enemy. Really effective treatment many times means that the pa- tient has to reverse his mode of living. Such folks 'are often impa- tient, and impatience 'doesn't help ulcers. You, Mr. G, A. W., stayed on your diet for three Ulcers In Canada By JOSEPH G. Studies show it takes a|Pital said in a statement. Freeze month or two for x-rays to demonstrate that healing is in progress. So by taking liberties wit the diet after three months you may have been jumping the gun, before thorough heal- ing had occurred. REMAIN: EXPERIMENTAL Now as to freezing, some phy- Sicians regard this as still an experimental technique; others believe it has a place when medical treatment has failed but they are not yet willing to resort to surgery. Freezing is not a cure-all. It jinvolves 'certain complications jwhich have to*be reckoned with. It also requires specialized equipment and training. You haven't really given con- servative treatment an ade- quate chance; you start taking "liberties" with your diet and undo what has been accom- your instructions for perhaps a year or two. If by then your ulcers are stubbornly refusing to calm down, it is soon enough to see whether your doctor con- siders freezing in order. If so, he'll know where to refer you in Canada.
