Because of difficulties with the United States early in his racing career, Gomez does not ®/ride in that country. The former resident of Cuba failed to an- swer a draft notice at the time of the Korean War, but later married and lived in the U.S. A few years ago he was told he was not welcome there, and came to Canada. He says the reason for the U.S. action has never been made clear to him. In 1960, Gomez rode 270 win- ners, but quit racing a month before the season ended in Can- ada.
