(CP) -- "Go north, young man," has be- come the slogan in New Zea- land. The trend is so strong that it is causing increasing concern to the government -- Th census taken this year shows that the movement of population to the North Island is becoming more decided than ever. Throughout the early days of settlement, the larger South Island was also the more popu- lous. It fell behind long ago, but today is dropping back to an alarming extent. The census shows that for the first time the South Island has dropped below 30 per cent of the population. Of the 2,676,919 people in the country, 71 per cent now live in the north and only 29 per cent in the south. And the further north, the greater the population growth. Tne five cities which nave Pg in population by more 20. per cent since the census of five years ago, are all in the northern part of the North Island. Auckland, one of th farthest north cities, now is by so much ning out of balance. In the last five years Auckland has grown to 547,916 residents, and its in- crease of 90,550 is greater than that of any other eight cities combined. DEMAND SERVICES The speed of Auckland growth has brought corresponding de- mands for new motorways and services of all kinds, which in turn are causing cries of indig- nation from southern cities that greedy Auckland is seeking to gobble up the entire national budget. The growth of the city, which now numbers more than a fifth of the national population, is having a snowball effect. The warmer climate is one factor attracting people from the south. But as growth continues, more factories are attracted to open near the largest market, demanding increased staff, so that growing opportunities draw Sui "Mure" youig "people iivai elsewhere. One of the problems of drift to the north has been the con- tinued loss of parliamentary seats by the South Island. This difficulty now has been met by stabilizing South Island repre- sentation at 25 in the House of the largest city in the country that it is throwing national plan- Representatives.
