BOY SCOUTS of CANADA (Oshawa District Council) Camp Samac, Oshowe, Ontario, is the only camp of its kind and magni- tude in Canada. It comprises of 172 acres of rolling hills and valleys and nature trails, It was presented to the Oshawa Scout Council in 1941 by Colonel R. S. McLaughlin, chairman of the Board of General Motors of Canada, The camp was officially opened in 1946 by Lord Rowallan, Chief Scout of the British Commonwealth. Camp Samac is the training centre of Oshawa Scouting. There are 25 buildings on the property, a swimming pool of Olympic standards, a trading post, pioneering grounds and camping areas where over fifteen thousand scouts from many parts of the world camp each year. Camp Samac not only serves as an excellent camping and training centre but is also the headquarters for scouting in the Oshawa and East Whitby Township district, On June the 4th, 1966, the new administration centre was opened by Colonel R, S. McLaughlin, It is from this centre that Oshawa District Scouting is administered to the 36 scout groups, comprising of 81 units sponsored by churches and community groups. The membership stands at.an all time high of 3,457. The Wolf Cubs of the District are celebrating their 50th anniversary during 1966, a new five star (badge) scheme has replaced the old two star system. This will create a new interest and will also attract new recruits to the Movement. Perhaps the most exciting changes in Scouting will come in the Boy Scout section, The new program is presently being tested and should' be fully approved for use in 1967. It will be the beginning of a boy. centered program as. opposed to a set adult oriented program for boys. This new program will. have closer links with the community and will encourage greater use of outside resources such as The Canadian Red Cross Water Safety program, the Royal Life Saving (water) program, and St. John Ambulance program. One of the major changes will be in the scout age. Boys from fourteen to seventeen will go into the Venturer section (a new addition to the or leaving the updated Scout program: for boys eleven to thirteen Robert J, Branch, Executive Secretary
