Grandfather Clock: This is of $250,000 In Treasure Found By Underwater Adventurer HAMILTON, Bermuda (CP)-- Underwater adventurer Teddy Tucker, who has_ recovered more than $250,000 worth of treasure from shipwrecks around the Bermuda _ islands during the last 10 years, has decided to go at his business scientifically. The 40-year-old bearded Ber- mudian has acquired a magne- tometer from the Smithsonian Institution of Washington, D.C., that can detect a variety of metals including iron; brass and Jead. Tucker said that his ap- paratus was specially designed fer treasure hunting water. Tucker, who has already tested the magnetometer along Bermuda's reefs, said he ex- pects to make "some very in- teresting finds in the next few years." During the last 10 years, Tucker has found more than $250,000 worth of jewels, gold and historic items which have been buried in old shipwrecks. Half a dozen of the more than 100 wrecks ne nas charted mav contain greater wealth than he has found, he said. The Bermuda islands, less than 1,000 miles south of Nova Scotia, are the most northerly coral islands in the world. Hun- dreds. of miles of reefs. sur- rounding the islands have wrecked more than 250 ships since Sir George Somers and the Sea Venture cracked up near St. George's in 1609. FINDS WORTH FORTUNE In 1955, Tucker swam up from a wreck of a 16th century Spanish galleon with an emer- ald-studded gold cross which was later valued at $75,000. He lecated the wreck by floating ever the reefs in a lighter-than- air balloon. In 1959, he took such valua- bles as 50 pieces of eight, sev eral gold nuggets and a 40-inch- long gold chain from the hulk of a 17th century ship. A gold bar taken in 1962 has been valued at $16,000; and a second gold bar, weighing 39-ounces and taken in 1965, has been valued at $50,000 by the Smith- sonian Institution. 'Most of the valuables taken to date have been recovered Firm Specializes In Aluminum Supreme Window and Door Products (Oshawa) Ltd., has peen an established firm for the Jast fourteen years serving Oshawa and district.
