N--Alvin 9--Court Martial 6--Huckleberry Hound 4--Movie your partner leads the nine of diamonds, Dummy plays the king, but, being a thoughtful player, you do not automatically play the ace. Instead, you take a moment or two to consider the hand as a whole, and more particularly, your play at this point. You cer- tainly don't want to be stam- ag into taking the ace and en thinking the hand over, be- cause that would be doing things in exactly the wrong order, The first thing you ask your- self is the significance of the nine of diamonds. You know that it is not a fourth best lead, nor can it be the top of a se- quence, since you are looking at the eight. The nine could be the top card of a worthless three- card suit, but it is far more likely to come from either a doubleton or a singleton. If the nine is a singleton, it must be right to take the ace and return a diamond, but if the nine is a doubleton, the proper defense must be fo let dummy win the trick with the king, at the same time signaling with the eight to show possession of the ace. There is no good reason to think that declarer is more apt to have five diamonds that four; on the contrary, he is much more likely te have four dis. monds than five. Therefore you permit dummy to win the open- ing lead, and, since there is no way for declarer to prevent you from later giving partner a ruff, a Ahab spac defeat the con- ct. SALLY'S SALLIES 49. The doctor says I have. porphyrins or porphyrinuria,.These of course, are new words to me. He also said it's nothing to really worry about and that it has something to do with the liver.--Mrs. C. C . Various chemicals give color to parts of the body. Pigments called porphyrins give blood its red color. Some individuals cannot toler- ate and get rid of these red compounds. It is a rather rare ailment and an inherited trait. The disease is called por- phyria; urine becomes discol- ored, a dark burgendy, and that is call porphyrinuria. It is incurable, but its seri- ousness can vary. Sometimes a person gets over the disease spontaneously. Your problem is to ease or prevent annoying symptoms. Muscle weakness is one of them, as in your case. Violent abdominal pains are another. Various parts of the body may be affected. The liver is one, as in your case. There can be mental symptoms. REDUCE EXPOSURE Attacks come and go and your goal (and your doctor's) is to avoid as many of them as possible. Sometimes too much sunshine can trigger the problem, so watch out for ex- Muscle Weakness Can Cause Ailment By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD in the eye. Since then the origin of the trouble, increased pressure in the eye, has become known, but the old name remains. In fact, glaucoma once was used t@ mean cataracts, which of course is a quite different disorder. Glaucoma has no relation to cancer. cessive exposure, ically if your skin seems to be affected during an attack, You may need sedation at times. However, don't use bar- biturates as they can touch off attacks. Tranquilizers may be helpful. Infections also can be triggers, so they should be com- batted as quickly as recognized, but it is wise to avoid sulfa drugs. There are plenty of oth- ers available' anyway. Men- strual periods can_ influence attacks. Steroid (cortisone-type) drugs sometimes are tried. If they help, fine, but this cannot be predicted in advance. In some instances removal of the spleen is beneficial. Your doctor should be the judge of whether your case warrants that. The disease can affect either sex but is much more frequent in women. Dear Dr. Molner: I have noted that doctors diagnose tu- mors as carcinoma, lipoma, an- gioma, etc., not necessarily all malignant. Why then is the eye disease, glaucoma, not a tumor, but pressure in that organ? Is glaucoma really cancer?--A. H. "Oma" means a growth, or tumor. Carcinoma, sarcoma and others are cancerous; lipoma, angioma and many others are not, although all are growths. Glaucoma was so named be- cause in advanced cases the PLANNING A.+. © BANQUET © CONVENTION © MEETING First Class Facilities For 20 to 400 Guests Quality Service Experienced Staff RESERVE YOUR FUNCTION NOW! 723-4641 HOTEL 4
