(CP Photo) Match Firm Gets Struck PEMBROKE, Ont. "({€P) -- Contract negotiations tween the Eddy Match Co. Ltd. and 175 striking employees broke off Monday without agreement and no further meetings have been scheduled, a union spokes- man said today. Greg Charette, president of Local 3195 of the United Broth- erhood of Carpenters and Join- ers, said in a statement 'not one of the issues in contest" were agreed upon. The employees struck at mid- night, Aug. 17, over demands "in the areas of management operations, pensions and wages."' Mr. Charette would not elaborate on the union's de- mands. J. C. Bennett, general mana- ger of Eddy's match division, said in a statement that nego- tiations had broken down over minor items. The company said average wages in the match plant were $1.83 an hour for men and $1.53 an hour for women. In the in- dustrial products division aver- age scale was $2.40 an hour. Prior to a conciliation board report which recommended fur- ther bargaining, the union re- jected pay increases of from six to 20 per cent for the first year and a flat seven cents an hour increase for the second year of a two-year contract. Organization Alters Views TORONTO (CP) -- Roland Fournier, public relations officer for the Association Canadienne Francaise d'Education d'Onta- rio, said Monday his organiza- tion is evaluating its education program to accommodate an in- creasing number of French- speaking children in the prov- ince. He said in an interview there is often opposition in separate schools from English-speaking Roman Catholics concerning provision for classes in French for these children. "Most of the resistance comes from non-French-speaking Ca- tholics for economic reasons," he said. 'We appreciate their fears but there is no increase in the school budget if there is a bilingual classroom." Last week, Mr. Fournier sug" gested that French ~ speaking parents were considering opt- ing out of the province's sep- arate school system and mov- ing into the public schools if they could be guaranteed French-language classes. The association supplies a French-speaking teacher. and, where local boards give appro- val, usually two classes of about 30 students open at first with more following. Classes are open only to children who have at least one French - speaking parent. He said there about 150,000 French-speaking Canadians liv- ing between Kingston and Wind- sor, almost half of them in the Toronto area. French - speaking Canadians are well-established at the pri- mary level in Welland, Nia- gara Falls and Hamilton. In Welland the French community has a parish, secondary schools, credit union and a business men's association. Jolt Causes Life - In - Death ANKARA, Turkey (AP)--Alp Reel, a 30-year-old orthopedic intern, has been living "like a vegetable," as one doctor puts it, for the last five years. July 20, 1961, Reel was taking x-rays of a patient at Ankara University medical faculty hos- pital. He came in contact with a faulty highload line to the x-ray machine. He was felled by a tremendous jolt of elec- tricity and his brain was dam- aged. He is still alive--at the same hospital--lying on a spe- cially made bed with an air mattress. His physician, Professor Or- fan Titiz, says that Reel's elec- troencephalogram -- measuring brain activity-has not changed in five years. There is no ac- tivity. The Gnly signs of life are oc- casional reflexes on Reel's face, fingers or toes. Baby food, fruit juice and serum are fed through tubes into his nose and mouth. We wouldn't be among Canada's leading food retailers. That's for sure! We're talking about the clerks who still manage a smile and a "Thank You" late Saturday afternoon after a busy week's work -- and even on days they aren't feeling tip-top. We're talking about our supervisors, store managers, department heads and their assistants who shape the backbone of A&P. Those behind the scenes, too -- literally hundreds of devoted employees in our offices, warehouses, and other facilities. Without all these fine people, there wouldn't be an A&P -- and we know it. They work hard ... we're proud of them. Like most of us, most of them will rest too...on Labour Day.
