6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, August 19, 1966 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell Associate Sports Editor WHITBY LASCO Steelers, on the brink of elimination, Jame up with a fine victory, right in Dixie, in their OLA Junior 'B' League championship finals last night and now have a chance to even up the series at three wins apiece, when they play the sixth game in Whitby Arena, on Sunday afternoon. Grabbing a win on the other team's floor should give the Whitby Steelers the confidence and the desire need- ed, to not only tie up the series but to go on and win the seventh game, in Dixie, next Tuesday night. Up in Brooklin, they'll jam their arena to the rafters tonight, for the sixth game of that Senior "'A'"' semi-final series, between the Red- men anc Brampton Excelsiors. Brooklin cleared a major hurd'e with their big win the other night, right in Port Credit and tonight's game on their home floor, gives last year's Mann Cup finalists their big chance to clean up the series, eliminate the Excelsiors and move into the Eastern Canada (Ontario) finals against Peterborough Pepsi's. SATURDAY looms as one of the biggest sports days of the entire summer season, for Oshawa fans, with a wide variety of action on the menu, as can be seen in the "Sports Calendar'. Major event of importance is the On- tario Cup championship soccer game, at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium, tomorrow evening at seven o'clock, when Oshawa Modern Grill Thistles meet London Marconi- Italia, in the deciding game, of their home-and-home, total- goals series. This year, the Ontario Cup winners will not represent the province, in the Canadian championship final. Instead, the Canadian final will be a tournament affair, in Winnipeg, and an All-Star team will be named to represent Ontario. Oshawa Thistles say that they had no word of this, = until two weeks ago and they are irate. They'll be making a strong bid to defeat and eliminate London, in the big one "here tomorrow night -- and if they do, the Oshawa club plans to challenge the Ontario Soccer body's all-stars, just to prove which team is stronger and should qualify to repre- sent the province. Since most of the Ontario soccer officials haven't seen more than one game this summer -- how can they be qualified to select an all-star team? It looks like a last-minute, slip-shod arrangement, smacking of the lack of Steelers Still Alive Davidson Scores Four Cleaners Top Pirates As Preston Sets Pace jwe chatted with after the game | Captain Wayne Davidson of | Wednesday night, was confi- |Whitby Lasco Steelers. was the/dent as he said "It will be all |take-charge man last night as, over Thursday night." | with his team facing elimina-| Perhaps he wishes it was, as ition he spearheaded them to alcoach Glen Lotton and> the \15-9 verdict oyer the pennant-|Steelers feel they have the BY CLIFF GORDON jwinning Dixie Toronto Town-|range now and will. make it ship team in an Ontario Junior) mighty hot for the Dixie team | B lacrosse game played at the|come Sunday afternoon. The way Redmen are playing of late, one would have to say jit has been an all-round team 'effort. You can not pin-point their success to any one player. SOFTBALL and baseball playoff games are in the spot? light tomorrow, along with the soccer activity, which in- cludes a Darlington League playoff game in Zion, with Maple Grove opening the semi-finals there. There are no fewer than eight OASA playoff games involving Oshawa * teams, scheduled for Saturday including Minden at Brook- lin, tomorrow 'night. Quality Fuel Midgets play their third game against Scarborough, tomorrow afternoon, in Picker- ing and here at North Oshawa, the Oshawa Pee Wee champs open a series against Belleville. In the evening, Storie Park plays Peterborough boys, third game of their Squirt series. Ajax Merchants and Newmarket were rained out last night and they'll try again, tomorrow night in Ajax. Gale's Lum- ber and Jaycee Juveniles both open playoff rounds away from home but the big attraction for softball fans at home is the opening game in the Intermediate 'A' series, with Whitby Merchants facing Oshawa Bad Boys, at Alexandra Park, Saturday night, at eight o'clock. In OBA '"'hardball" play, Oshawa. Bantams face Belleville at Alexandra tomor- row afternoon and the Legionnaires have to win to stay in the running. Acadian Cleaners beat Little Britain Juniors last night and they play the third game in Little Britain again tomorrow night. If a fourth is necessary, it will be at Lakeview Park on Sunday afternoon. If Sklar Midgets win tonight in Peterborough, they go back there tomorrow after- noon for their third game. PAUL TRAN Riding and Dave O'Brien, lacrosse The other players, while per- haps not getting quite as much floor time, have served their purpose well when called to take up the slack Don Bruce, hampered by in- juries this year, is still a strong defenceman. Jerry Bur- rows, a late starter this year, is dangerous and a good checker Ken Lotton, out with an injury that required surgery, is a doubtful starter for tonight's game. Paul Tran, making his first start in Senior lacrosse after a five-year absence, has helped act as a policeman and has helped to keep a lot of the so-called tough guys honest. Bill Preston was the winning pitcher for Cleaners but the lefthander would probably talk just as long about his hitting as his pitching. He singled three times to figure in four of his team's runs before he left in favor of Murray Godfrey in the sixth, when Pirates struck for a pair of runs. Over the first five innings, Preston blanked Pirates on one hit. He ran into trouble in the sixth, however, when he gave up a pair of singles and issued three walks with one out. He left with two runs in and the bases loaded and Godfrey took over to fan the next two atters. Godfrey surrendered a single run in the seventh but Clean- ers applied the clincher with a run in the eighth off Doug Stabler. Godfrey lost his control brief- ly and walked the next three batters, forcing in a run, but he settled away to fan the next two batters.
