2 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, August 18, 1966 A GLANCE AROUND THE GLOBE Results Of Auto Agreement Expected Says Tory Chief OTTAWA (Special) -- Oppo- sition leader John Diefenbaker said here today that the re- sults of the Canada-U.S. auto Agreement are turning out to be exactly what he had ex- pected, He said that when the agree- ment was signed between the two countries he had predicted it would mean a loss of jobs for Canadians, higher car prices and higher profits for the manufacturers. Commenting on the recent General Motors announcement of a cutback in employment in the new model year, Mr. Dief- enabaker said it was exactly what he thought would happen. "Canadian manufacturers are selling their cars in the United States in competition with U.S.- made cars while the Canadian car buyer is being mulcted," Mr. Diefenbaker charged. "There are more auto parts being imported into Canada than ever before and Canadians are losing jobs in this indus- iy. It was Mr. Diefenbaker's first public appearance since return- ing to Ottawa from a western holiday trip and he urged im- mediate action by the govern- ment to forestall the threatened railway strike.
