6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, 'Tesedey, july 26, 1966 Cd SPORTS BEAT By ERIC WESSLBY Times Sports Editor Major league bird dogs attending the weekend junior baseball tournament at Toronto's Maple Leaf Stadium certainly didn't see much in the way of talent as far as hitting goes, None of the teams entered could gener- ate much of an offence, and it was this fact that kept Oshawa Acadian Cleaners out of the semi-final bracket, Cleaners faced Ottawa St. Francois in the opening round and certainly had enough chances to win, However, they lacked the big hit at the right time, Turning point in the game came in the fifth when they stranded runners on second and third, Ottawa hop- ped into a two-run lead in the next inning, with a "fluke" call setting the stage for the damage. WITH A RUNNER on first and no one out, Al Hoit, Cleaners' centre fielder, made a long run to haul in a fly ball, In the act of throwing the ball, however, Holt dropped it and the base umpire ruled he didn't. have possession long enough for the catch to count, So, in- stead of a runner on first arid one out, Ottawa had two runners on base. The next batter lined a single into right field scoring one run but alert. fielding cut down the other base-runner trying for third, with the batter. going to second, A double scored him CLEANERS HAD A GOOD chance in the last of the sixth but it just wasn't their day, Len Stabler and Pat Watters both drew walks to open the innine and, after a wild pitch, they had moved to third and second, Youth- ful Ottawa pitcher Chris Harber uncorked a wild pitch and Stabler took off for the plate. The ball however, hit the concrete portion of the stand behing the plate and caromed back to the Ottawa catcher, who promptly tagged Stabler for the out, That was if for Cleaners Rod Williams, Cleaners' catcher, almost forced To- ronto officials to re-design their screen behind home plaie when he crashed into it while chasing a foul ball. fortunaely, Williams was not injured GREEN GAELS CAME OUT ahead in Saturday night's junior lacrosse game at Hastings but the real losers in the long run could be a pair of Oshawa players, At the rate they were going in that game, Ross Jones and Gaylord Powless might well have picked up a few more gouls, thus making their bid for team and league scoring marks easier in their remaining games, Jones is chasing John Davis' goal-scoring mark of 93 while Powless is after Davis' point-mark of 184, which is also the league record, OSHAWA SKLAR FURNITU ball Association midget champions, made a fine showing in the opening round of the Leaside midget baseball tournament at Talbot Park Monday, although they dropped a 4-3 decision to Mount Dennis. The game was well-played, however, and a large crowd thoroughly enjoyed the action, Officials are hoping the remainder of the tournament will be as exciting Sklars now have a breather until Ontario playoffs start, although two or three may accompany Acadian Cleaners to Merriton for a junior tournament this weekend RE, Eastern Ontario Base- ALEXANDRA PARK tonight should see some exciting action as Jayceos and People's Clothing hook up in the third game of their best-of-three playoff to declare a city repre- sentative for Ontario playoffs. Jaycees won the opener 1-0 and held a comfortable 3-0 lead Sunday in the second game before People's caught fire and grabbed a 6-3 verdict.
