West led a diamond and our optimistic declarer took the dia- mond with the queen, drew three rounds of trumps, and then played a diamond to the king. West showed out, unfor- tunately, and the hand col- lapsed entirely after South had cashed the ace of diamonds and then played a club to the king. The outcome was that he went down one. Had South been a worrier, he might have made the con- tract. He would have realized at trick one that the sole dan- ger of the hand was that West's diamond lead was a singleton, and he would have started to think in terms of how to over come this possibility. After winning the diamond lead, he would have cashed the Q-J of trumps and then led a |diamond towards dummy. By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, M.D. Dear Dr. Molner: About 20 years ago I had a stomach ulcer. The doctor prescribed Sippy powder and in a short while I was able to eat foods quite within reason. Lately I find I have an ulcer again and it gives me a lot of trouble. I have tried every drugstore in town to buy Sippy powder but they don't know what I am talking about. Can it be procured anywhere, or has something taken its place?-- Cc. M. Various preparations have taken its place. Years ago Dr. Sippy developed an excellent routine (including his antacid powder) for treatment of peptic ulcer. The powder consisted of such chemicals as calcium, bismuth, sodium bicarbonate and mag- nesium compounds. Ig worked quite well, especially if the pa- tient realized that he couldn't sensibly expect the medicine to do it all. Proper attention to diet, adequate rest, avoidance of excessive tension, learning not to let one's emotions get in an uproar--all these were im- portant parts of treatment. There was one fly in the oint- ment--or in the Sippy powder. It was found to produce a ten- dency to excessive alkalinity, and the digestive system must be somewhat acid if it is to per- form properly. This alkalosis was due to the high. absorbabil- ity of Dr. Sippy's chemicals. Antacids now have been de- veloped which are less absorb- able, hence work more grad- ually and gently, and while reducing excess acidity do not destroy it to a degree that re- tards digestion. The néw medi- then have cashed the king of spades and the diamonds to nail |down twelve tricks. | If, as in the actual case, it jturned out that West had no more diamonds, South would | Still have been certain of eleven jtricks whether or not West | elected to ruff, | Thus, if West ruffed, South ;would have five spades, five diamonds and the heart ace for a total of eleven tricks, while if West elected not to ruff, South would still make eleven tricks by winning the diamond in dummy, ruffing a low diamond high, and then playing a spade to the king. It is easy to see that the actual declarer had a@ practi- cally sure thing going for him as soon as dummy came down, and he undoubtedly should have made the contract, but, unfortunately, he was not the worrisome type. MAKE MEDICAL ADVANCE BIRMINGHAM, England (CP)--A British firm designed a home kidney machine that costs a little more than $3,000. The device will help many suf: fering from dangerous kidney ases who now find it diffi- to get treatment at hospi- ause of shortages of machines\,and operators. num and magnesium salts, are very effective. I suspect from your letter, Mr. C. M., that you are trying to treat yourself, and have not been to your doctor this time. I think decidely that you should see him. MAY BE MALIGNANT Without wanting to frighten you, I must point out that re- currence of ulcer symptoms after a 20-year lapse are a suspicious situation. Could what seems to be an ulcer be the beginning of a malignancy? You should be examined, with x-ray, to find out promptly while cure is still possible. Using ulcer treatment when the "ulcer" actually is a cancer will not bring relief, and it will waste precious time. Before you do anything else, have a physician confirm whether it is an ulcer or some- thing else. Dear Dr. Molner: Can any- thing serious come of an adult having pinworms? I have loose bowel movements and wonder if it is the result of pinworms. --C. H. E. Besides irritation and rectal itching, pinworms can get into the appendix and cause trouble there. Your persistent looseness should be investigated by a doctor. It could be worms, or something else. Either way, it should be corrected. Note to Mrs. R. H.: No re- sponsible people have yet claimed to be able to cure acute leukemia; however, there are now many cases which have been kept in remission (im- proved) for a number of years, Dear Dr. Molner Recently my wife's doctor told her that her blood pressure was ap- proaching the 200 mark. Here are my questions Do or don't travel? Would the tension of preparations, flying, etc., be offset by rest and re- laxation at the other end of the line? Do or don't sunbathe? Will the sun have an effect on her blood pressure? On past trips, sunbathing has been almost a must. At home we have a swim- ming pool and sun-tanning area. rit Flying in modern pressyr- - ized, comfortable planes should not affect her blood pressure. (If she also has a heart condi- tion, it would be wise to get her doctor's advice before mak- ing the trip.) The exhilaration of travel is not necessarily tension. If she is somewhat nervous about fly- ing or travel, a mild sedative or tranquillizer may be in order. I've always contended that moderate exposure to the sun is not harmful. However, if your wife gets a full feeling in the and some for as much as 10 cations, featuring alumi- years, ' head or a headache, then seek the shade, a
