Campbell PAitas Ce eletteded | aaania snenvesw te Sports THE ALL-ONTARIO Junior Softball Tournament, for 1966, 'is now history but. the success of the 9th edition of this sports classic will be remembered by all who attended, as one of the most successful ever held, And in spite of the thousands of softball fans obliged to give their children an outing at the annual UAW Picnic, there were stil] more than a thousand people who took in the day's action, which got underway at one o'clock and lasted until a couple of min- utes before 11:00 p.m. There were nearly a _thousand_on hand for the final game and they enjoyed a treat. Bob Eccles, the husky hurler from Galt, who is no stranger to tournament play here (the Galt Slees won it in 1963, as a Juvenile team) completed the iron man's task, Galt played four games and Eccles saw action in all four, He pitched a total of 24 innings and. had the amazing total of 42 strikeouts. And he didn't allow a single run all day -- until there were two out, in the last inning of the final game, Galt Slees had to go 14 innings to eliminate Woodstock 'Flat Tires", Niagara Falls McRaes held them to 1-0; they beat out-Osh- awa Scugog Cleaners in the semi-finals 3-0 and won the final, over Scarborough Glass, 3-1. The visiting teams had nothing but praise for the tournament and the officers and volunteer _ workers for the Oshawa City and District Softball Association, for their great job. A couple of the teams, making their first visit to the Oshawa All-Ontario tournament, were amazed at the accommodations for such an event, available in Alexandra Park, There were four tournament games going on at one time -- with a baseball game being played on the big "hardball" diamond, at the same time, 'Alexandra Park, for the big win| Ross Gavel started for the) 7, | John Sharpe pitched the shut- out for the Plumbers, giving up only two hits.
