Killer Whale -- Drowns In Net SEATTLE. (AP)--Namu, the killer whale captured off Can- ada, died Saturday night when he apparently was drowned after becoming entangled in a net at his pen on the water- front. Ted Griffin, owner of the 25- foot show animal, first killer whale to be kept alive for any time in captivity, said Namu apparently was drowned when he dived under a float at his pen and got caught in a peri- meter net. Whales are mam- mals and must surface from time to time for air. Griffin, 30, noted that this is the mating season and that! Namu may have been trying to escape to seek a mate. He said the whale had been ramming the nets of his pen "at pretty high speed" in recent days. "'He hadn't eaten for a day," Griffin said, "and for a week or so his performances haven't been in the proper style, so maybe he was trying to es- cape." Namu swam into the nets of some. fishermen a year ago off the British Columbia town of Namu. He later was sold to Griffin, who operates a marine aquarium here Held Over Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. he es i Dag ' ' COLUMBIA PICTURES presents Rosalind | Russell ly /Mills GEORGIAN MOTOR HOTEL Welcomes You To the VINTAGE ROOM APPEARING THIS WEEK THE INTIMATES CHARLIE HOWARD and CANDY STEVENS 9 P.M, 'til 1 A.M, at the GEORGIAN MOTOR HOTEL THORNTON RD.
