Few foreigners on the scene, witnessing the unfolding drama of a bankrupt nation of 105,000,- 000 whose geography makes it a cold war arena, care to make predictions about the outcome. There are too many lurking dangers. The crust of civil peace is thin. The political volcano which exploded last fall, after an at- tempted Communist take-over, has quieted. But appearances in the paradoxical nation of 3,000 islands are deceptive. The om- inous rumble still can be heard beneath the surface. There can be new eruptions at any mo- ment. A military take-over of the government is developing, to supplant the autocratic rule of 65-year-old President Sukarno with a new regime obliged to come to grips with an economic madhouse. For years the resources of the nation were -extravagantly wasted, its productivity de- stroyed, its priorities turned up- side down, as if the health of the economy was of no conse- quence. Sukarno and those who obeyed his whims announced their intention of "building na- tional character." Evidently that meant monuments to Su- karno's rule, which took prece- dence over food and public wel- fare. AIMED AT PRESTIGE It meant grandiose schemes to raise the prestige of Indone- sia in what Sukarno and his communist - leaning supporters called NEFO. NEFO meant "new emerging forces." These, by Sukarno's reasoning, were one day going to overwhelm OLDEFO, or "old established forces."' To accom- plish this Sukarno planned. a CONEFO, which meant "con- vergence of new emerging forces."' To impress CONEFO Sukarno ordered more and more monuments to his regime. It was all part of what the slogan-loving Sukarno called-- for some unfathomable reason in Italian--"vivere periocoloso"' or living dangerously. From the Chinese Communists he bor- rowed a phrase, 'reliance on one's own resources"--in Indo- nesian, '"'berdikari"--to signify his defiance of the Western of world of NEKOLIM. By NEKO- LIM, he meant "neocolonialism, colonialism and imperialism." Last Oct. 1 the Communist party suddenly struck for power. High military officers were murdered. The Commu- nists missed and a wave of re- vulsion against both the Chi- nese-oriented and powerful In- donesian Communist party and the Chinese themselves swept the nation. Tens of. thousands of Communists were slaughtered or imprisoned, The leadership was executed. The party was destroyed. Today, the skeléton of the CONEFO complex stands in Ja- karta as a mocking reminder of Sukarno's notions of national prestige. Across from the luxurious Ho- tel Indonesia, built by Japanese war reparations, stands a 24- storey steel structure, its steel beams rusting. It would have been CONEFO's trade building. Nearby is a 14-storey depart- ment store building named Sa- rinah after a peasant girl. The building is finished but empty. There is nothing to put inside it. If there were, the people would have no money to buy. Slang Speeds Auto Assembly DETROIT (AP)--Automobiles are being fitted with '"'false teeth." Also with "bird baths" "chili bowls." Slang expressions such as these have been compiled into a list by workers at a Chrysler Corp. assembly plant here. Auto parts by the hundreds have been renamed to corres- pond with something similar in shape, appearance or behavior. It makes it easier for workers to understand each other and saves time in work where speed is important. Rather than ask for "the steering wheel horn button as- sembly' and be met by a and ,| blank stare, they just say "false teeth.' The teeth, in this case, are nylon inserts for headlight rims. "Bird baths" are. drainage fit- tings for folded convertible tops. There's also "pope orn"? which means nylon inserts. that bracket rivets and screws. "Cat whiskers" are strips of hairy weather stripping that hug the -- side windows of a Car. at. 7.00 p.m. ...
