In fact, gone are the barbers, In the Oshawa Barbershop- pers' Harmony Society, only the harmony and fellowship of barbershop quartets live on. "Barbershops used to be the men, and today, besides retain- ing.the practise of singing, our meetings are full of fun and fellowship," says barbershop- per Mervyn Scott, also a vice- president of the Oshawa chap- ter. The barbershoppers would ra- ther sing than work, but unique- ly combine work with song in their charitable, fund-raising activities. 'We like to help groups scheming to raise money for a good cause," says Mr. Scott. ACHIEVEMENTS Despite each person's person- al modesty, they quickly point out the achievements of their quartets and chorus. The Sportsmen quartet is the winner of the district comedy competition: their Four on a Cord quartet is the Ontario dis- trict quartet champion, and at | ° the International Preliminary competitions, Four on a Cora | placed fourth and the Sports- men came fifth. It was later brought to Osh- |} awa by Harry Johnson, Osh- | awa's first chapter president | who had. a 45-man membership. Today, there are 30 chapters and 1300 barbershoppers in On- tario and about 30,000 in the U.S. and Canada. International headquarters is at Kenosha, Wisconsin. The society has an underly- |ing purpose apart from: being |an all-man singing group. The ' | Oshawa chapter of barbershop- | pers' pet project is a source of | pride to them. They contribute to the Ontario district's sponsorship of a child at Topeka, Kansas; the only | hospital in the world that offers logopaedics treatment. "A speechless child with pos- sibilities of recovery is a deep concern of ours," says Mervyn Scott. He said the barbershop- | pee motto is, "We sing that they shall speak."
