Over that period, depending whether or not it was a Queen or a reigning King, on the throne of England-- the race was called either The King's Plate or The Queen's Plate, There's nobody around today who saw the first race in 1859 -~ for that matter, there's nobody still living who saw the 11th running of The Queen's Plate, That was in 1870 --and did you know that it was run in Whitby? The locale of the hig race wasn't always the same place, as it is today, newmarket was once the site of this classic, But back in 1870, on the 24th of May (they always ran them on 'the Queen's Birthday" in those years) the Oxyeen's Plate race was held in Whithy. They refer to that now as 'Jack Bell's year". "Jack Bell" was the name of the horse that won "The 50 Guineas" -- the special purse presented to the win- ner, by the reigning monarch of the time, Her Most Gra- cious Majesty, Queen Victoria, the ine THE QUEEN'S PLATE race in 1870, at Whitby. proved a memorable one. The anticipated presence of His Royal Highness Prince Arthur, stimulated both interest and at- tendance. Excursion trains were run on the Grand Trunk Railway and thousands flocked into Whitby, from all quar- ters and they had about 10,000 fans on hand, at race time, The early visitors, many came two or three days in ad- vance, made The Robson House their headquarters, That's where the betting pool box was operated, A horse named "Terror" was prime favorite that day but two of "the field"' entries, "Jack Bell" and "Jack on the Green", passed the leaders and fought it out, down the stretch, with the out- sider Jack Bell winning out in a neck-and-neck finish, Other horses included Rathoan, Rapid Roan and Terror, finishing in that order, behind Jack Bell and Jack on the Green, Other entries were Highland Maid, New Dominion, Gaiety, Lady May and Liberty. The jockey on "Jack Bell" was John Bennet, his first mount in Canada, The horse was owned by a man named Chariey Gates "Club stand" guests on that John Sandfield Macdonald, Premier of Ontario. However, HRH Prince Albert was un- able to attend. In those days, the race was a two-mile affair, open to all horses bred, owned and trained in the province of Ontario, that had never won public money, The time of the race on Whitby's track in 1870 was 3:54%. The account of the race, in commenting upon the victory by the rank outsider "Jack Bell', reads -- "one winner's purse looked as if it had the gout; but oh, what a multitude of wallets were shrivelied up that memorable day, Yokels from "gway back" had won the price of a horse, with a five- dollar note, and their breeches pockets were double-twisted to prevent the losers from coaxing it away from them the next day." We realize that the sidelight story we have re- lated is not new -- but in view of The Queen's Plate race tomorrow afternoon, it is "newsy" and we hope, of timely interest to the horse racing fans of today, living around these parts. For the facts and information, we are. indebted to friend '"'Tom" Bouckley, the extremely enthusiastic Osh- awa and district historian and unofficial curator of Osh- awa's History Museum, AMONG THE SPECIAL memorable day was Hon ELEVEN HORSES, Canadian-foaled 3-year-olds, will comprise Saturday afternoon's Queen's Plate field, ten colts who will all carry 126 pounds and one filly, Solar Park, who will have a five-pound allowance. There is one "field entry' -- Frank Sherman of Hamilton having entered two horses, Holarctic and Famous Monarch, Titled Hero is cur- rently a 4-1 favorite and the odds will likely be even rough- er, by race time, The entries, in post position order, include Echo Lad, The Hangman, Bright Monarch, Arctic Troops, Titled Hero, Famous Monarch, Radiant Colors, Bye and Near, Holarctic, Big Jive and the filly, 'Solar Park' -- on the outside position. Conny Smythe's entry, "Bye and Near' is expected to provide Titled Hero with his toughest oppo- sition, but there are those who think Holarctic (he didn't run in the Plate Trials on Monday) rates a good look at the mutuel wickets. There are lots of sports events carded for Saturday but for about a half-hour, late tomorrow after- noon, the 107th running of The Queen's Plate will hold the sport spotlight of the country.
