@ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Mondey, June 13, 1966 iSPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell Associate Sports Editor FELIX CAPPELLA, the newest sensation in Canadian heel-and-toe racing, captured the Canadian 20-mile walking championship on Saturday in the fastest time ever recorded in this country, shattering the previous record set by Alex Oakley of Oshawa, by more than 13 minutes -- which is a tremendous cut off any track record time. Alex finished second in Saturday's gruelling grind, a full two minutes be- hind the 36-year-old Italian walker, who makes his home in Midiand. Alex's own time on Saturday was a full 10 minutes better than his own previous record, but not nearly good enough. He matched strides with Cappella for the first 16 miles but faded in the home stretch, although still far ahead of third-place finisher Pat Farrelly of Hamilton. Yvon Groulx of Montreal was fourth. The latter stayed with Cap- pella and Oakley for the first 12 miles, The Oshawa walker, tops in the sport for many years, is making a comeback after a two-year layoff, following the Olympic Games at Tokyo. He represented Canada in the Olympics at Melbourne, Rome and Tokyo. In 1963 he won a gold medal for Canada in the Pan-American Games, at Brazil. Cappella, who came to Canada in 1956, didn't take up competitive walking until five years ago and last summer, he captured the Canadian championship, here in Oshawa. GREEN GAELS moved into a tie for first place, along- side Mimico "Mounties", when the Long Branch Castrolites visited Oshawa on Saturday night. This was the game that had been postponed from Wednesday, due to examinations. A crowd of 800 was on hand for the game, not large enough to suggest that Saturday would be a more popular night for Oshawa's "home games" but still a respectable turnout. Gaels Too Strong For Castrolites } By DON McKINNON | Times Sports Writer 2S se eee cnt at the Ontario Junior A Lacrosse 'Association game Saturday 'night, it looked as if a beefy Long Branch team might be a |strong opponent for Oshawa iGreen Gaels. | The rest of the game proved | different, however, as the Green Gels beat Castrolites 16-9. Long Branch came out on the floor looking for its second win of the season. With two men short, the Gaels' Jones scored two quick ones, one from behind his neck as he flew by Welch, and another, eight seconds later, with an un- derhand shot. Long Branch's only goal of the second period came at 17 minutes, when Wayne Copeland took a pass from Pete Som- merville and beat Mery Mar- ishall with a quick side shot. Gary Lopak started in goal for the Gaels in the third period. He allowed five goals. A total of 25 penalties were handed out by referees. Ron Pet- tibone of Brampton and Art Rattle of Cooksville. Jim Higgs and Dave Keenan will be out of action, due to exams, as well as Don Stinson, who is serving the last of his six game suspension... Powless now has 75 points to lead the league in points. We noted the Long Branch goalie had red pants and this provided an adequate contrast.
