Buyers Gloomy As Index Rises By JAMES NELSON OTTAWA (CP) -- Are you spending more now and enjoy- ing it less? Then you won't be surprised to learn that the dollar has lost more than 20 cents in spending power since 1949. Or that it takes a full dollar today to buy what you could get for 37% cents before the Sec- ond World War. The computations are the re- sult of the latest price indexes reported Tuesday by the Do- minion Bureau of Statistics. The consumer price index based on 1949 consumer prices equalling 100 rose to 143.4 for May from 143.2 in April. That means last month !t cost $14.34 to buy what $10 bought in 1949. Or $1 today is the equivalent in purchasing power of 69 cents 17 years ago. The price index of 30 most- used Industrial raw materials, which dates from the prewar ears 1935-39, taken as equal- ing 100, was 266.2 last month. That means it takes $26.62 to buy what $10 would buy in the years before the war, MAKE MORE MONEY Of course, prhile spending more, most Canadians are mak- ing more money too. ctor GET THE CLASSIFIED HABIT Read & Use TIMES Want Ads Every Day 1 New merchandise mean more readers and new profits and more savings for more people. . the thousands of happy "Classified Shoppers.' | To Place Your Ad ON ont 723-8492 | | 'TIMES acti CLASSIFIED « join concert series.
