BA THE OSHAWA TIMES, Twosdey, Mey 31, 1966 THESE ARE TWO of the many photographs taken of the Ontarios and their tanks ite Mis during the Second World War and published in the Oshawa newspapers of the day recording the activities of the regiment in training and overseas, It's Demanding But Exciting Por Sh ideants i Student Militia training is now an accepted and very worth- while part of the Regiment's work, "Harn as you learn" say the recruiting pamphlets; and every year the Regiment receives far more applications than it has places to fill. The Ontarios, in 1956, was one of the first militia units in| Canada to launch a student training prograin, There is no doubt that the course has been a tremendous success, Well over 400 high school students have received the benefit of army training since the scheme was launched, This year's course gets under- way on July 11 at the Oshawa Armoury, The training program, as in previous years, will run for six weeks and will fit in with the high school holidays. The 40 young recruits have a fast, exciting summer. ahead of them, One of the main ideals of the course is to make better men of the young recruits and give them a rough, tough close up view of army life, 'If nothing else," explained the Ontario's CO, Colonel Wil- liam Paynter, "we would be happy if the students just turn- ed out better people from the course,"' The course is designed to be both demanding and interesting. And it is the challenge of it all that most fascinates the recruits, TANK INSTRUCTION A considerable part of the course: is- taken wp in tank instruction. The. students get to operate and learn the heavy, lumbering Shermans which the Regiment | has based at the Oshawa: Air- port, In previous years it has been proved that the tank instruction is what the students like best. By the end of the course the students are proficient in hand- ling and. servicing the vehicles as well as other soldierly skills. During the course the stu- dents receive regular army pay of $117 a2 month plus $60 sub sistence pay. They are issued with free unt forms and gear. Soon after the course begins the students are hard at work, Parade ground drill, ef course, is an essential part of the program, The instructors find, however, that the students enjoy this as much as they do the rest of the program, Prerequisites for the program are that candidates be high school students of good stand- ing between the ages of 16 and 19, They must be of good health and have their parents' consent to enrol in the course, To begin with each student is put through a demanding physi- cal examination, Afterwards they are thrown straight into military training. They must learn drill, weapons, first aid and a host of other basic subjects. In charge of this year's pro- gram is Major William Clarke. The students learn the safe and effective handling of weapons, Weapons included in the course include rifle and gub- machine gun, The students are soon put on to the firing ranges where they learn effective shoot- ing, During the summer the stu- dents will be taking part in the Regiment's summer camp which will take them out into the field, Safety plays a vital part in the course, Right from the start it is drummed into the students that they are handling danger- ous weapons. The student quickly learns the proper drill for each weapon he handles, The student militia course can be spread over three years. First year, as just described, covers basic training. In second year the students can move on to more advanced forms of training. Third year goes one step fur- ther and allows the young mili« tiaman to study Eentor NCO and officer training. 1866 TO 1966...
