GARDEN GUIDE Massive Floral Effect Produced By Mum Varieties For Landscaping By A. R. BUCKLEY Plant Research Institute Breeders of modern varieties of outdoor chrysanthemums are now concentrating upon their value as garden flowers in land- scape plantings. In consequence we Slave very shapely plants that a massive flora) effect with perfectly formed flowers on fairly short stems. These may be obtained in a variety of colors such as bright glowing fall bronzes or yellows, and pastel shades of pink or mauve, and in cultivars that ul- timately form spreading mounds for the front of the border and taller mounds for the 'rear. When selecting varieties for your garden, notice the flow- cae dates given in many catalogues. If you live in East- ern Canada select those kinds that reach maturity no later than September 20. In southern Ontario this date may be later but. on the prairies and other colder regions the date will be much earlier. Garden mums thrive in well- drained garden loam that has been improved by the addition of lots of organic matter such as peat, leaf mold, well rotted manure or compost. They like full sun but will flower well with only six hours of sunlight a day. Get the plants as soon as you can from your garden centre or nurseryman and plant from now until mid-June according to the planting dates for aunuals in your area. Most of the mums will arrive in peat pots filled with a-mixture of peat and per- lite. Soak these pots well be- fore planting and tear away a part of the top then set the pot and plant in the soil, During the summer put on a good mulch of peat, leaf «8 buckwheat hulls or cocoa sheils to keep the soil moist and cod and to conserve moisture, PINCH TERMINAL The most important operation in growing outdoor mums is to pinch out the terminal shoct when the plant is five or six inches tall. This causes the plant to branch and send up more shoots. These also should be pinched back when they reach five or six inches. You wiil then have a bushy plant with ists of bloom. Don't. do 'any more pinching after the middle of July. When the first flower buds ap- pear after this last pinching, give the plants a side dressing of two pounds of a complete fertilizer to a hundred square feet Of area, Apart from green and black flies, which can be controlled by spraying with an ali-pur- pose spray containing nicotine sulphate or malathion, the most serious pests of chrysanthe- mums are tranished plant bugs and leaf hoppers. These attack the buds and causes them to become deformed so that some- times only half of each flower develops. A weekly spraying with 50 per cent wettable DDT alternating with malathion will keep these pests in check. Start spraying in mid-July and keep on until the plants are in bloom. Virus diseases are the most serious of all and can be el- iminated only by special selec- tion and treatment given in the. stolon and cutting stages by commercial growers. The stunt disease makes the plant appear as a dwarf in leaf, plant and flower, All parts are so distort- ed that the plants fail to be or- namental. Mosaic virus can usually be distinguished by a yellowish-green mottling of the foliage. Pull out and destruy all Pom that appear to be so in- ted and buy new plants each spring. Te everwinter the so-called hardy garden mums in Eastern Canada leave the tops on and place evergreen boughs over them after the ground has fro- zen. Or to be on the safe side, - dig up the plants and plant them near the warm foundation of your house. This method is. quite successful on the prairies" too, if the western varieties. are used. Varieties in new colors, of more vigor and neater round shapes are constantly being de- veloped. The highest rated kinds in the Test Garden of the Plant Research Institute during the past three years are the following: Bronze:. Brown Eyes, paigner and Zonta. (CP) Grade 12 students at Richmond Hill High School have been spending their days in @ phys- ical education program called "Lifetime Sport." Developed by the school's ath- letic director, William Babcock, the program is designed to offer the older student sports he can use and participate in the rest of his life. Mr. Babcock said the students can golf, play tennis, learn fly fishing, trap shooting, archery and emen water skiing. He said the new course fills the need for the older student who wants something different, More than 78 students in this school north of Toronto are reg- istered in the course and Mr, Babcock said girls are showing as much interest as boys, se The regular physical educa- IN THE HOME WORKSHOP OUTDOORS OR INSIDE your house plans will like this ter- raced stand.
