6A THE OSHAWA TIMES, Scturdey, Mey 14, 1966 FIELD DAY OF CHAMPIONS an PC A 11): 8 SATEEN HUA REL SALT ISAO SERIES OF TABLOD MEETS New Sports Program In Whitby Schools WHITBY (Siai#} --A new and improved sports program will be inaugurated in the Whitby Public Schools this spring. A series of tabloid meets will be held at each of the eight schools followed by a Field Day of Champions. The tabloid meets will be held on the following dates: Col- borne School, June 9; Dundas School, June 3; E. A. Fairman School, June 10; R. A. Hutchi- son School, June 7; King Street School, June 17; Palmerston School, June 1; Kathleen Rowe and Brock Street Schools (com- bined), June 2. The Field Day of Champions for Grade 7 and 8 pupils will be held June 15 at Henry Street High School. This meet will be a contest of the best track and field athletes from Colborne, Dundas, E. A. Fairman,; R. A, Hutchison, Kathleen Rowe and St: John's Schools. The meet will have eight events. BUILD. PARTICIPANTS Roy Oliver, physical educa- 'tion consultant for the Whitby Public Schools, said the changes in the program will take place because the physical educa- tion department and the teach- ers are trying tp bull partici- pants rather - spectators. "Ia the traditional annual field day it is difficult to keep the majority of the children in- terested and it is obvious that this type of specialized compe- tition has little to recommend it at the kindergarten to Grade 6 level,' Mr. Oliver said. "Many schools have had to contend with the problem of running off events for a small percentage of the pupils while the others become difficult to handle on the sidelines. "There are several ways in which mass participation can be arranged. If all the children are occupied, the event becomes a valuable experience in group ac- tivity." MAIN VALUES "The main values to be de- rived from the school field day should be the high pupil inter- est and maximum pupil parti- cipation which ean he provtasg through a culmination activity to the track and flel4 skills taught to all pupils during the year," Mr. Oliver said. Each of the Whitby Publie Schools will hold a_ tabloid sports meet, This will be a short athletic team competes in each ber of teams take part. Each athletic meet in which a num<« ber of teams take part. Each event in turn and each member - of the team competes in each event, "This type of meet forms a very good method of putting a Jarge number of competitors through several athletic events on a competitive basis, said Mr, Oliver. pL uM SURE runt ntti eget te iT RENNER Giliawa Girls Win Honors At Ont. The longer the trailer--or mo- bile home -- the more status. Minimum equipment usually in- cludes air-conditioning, stereo, television and, of course, bath and kitchen facilities. Also drapes, lamps, wall-to-wall car- peting, refrigerator, one or two telephones and often a bar. Transported by studio aides from sound stage to sound stage --or even. hundreds of miles on location--the trailer becomes a comfortable home - away - from-home for relaxing, study- ing lines, having makeup ap- plied or dining. It's plugged into telephone, water and etectric lines. Steve McQueen's 35 - footer, costing about $26,000, has its own engine and is more like a bus. Twentieth Century-Fox sent it recently to Taiwan and Hong Kong for his use in The Sand Pebbles. This summer it will accompany him to Britain, Ger- many and France for another film. WATCHED RACES From an observation platform on top--canopy - covered and reached by aluminum ladder-- Steve watched the auto races at southern California's Riverside Raceway for two days last fall. Features include bar, galley and sleeping space for six. A married couple who attend to McQueen's needs, including meals, drove it to his New Or- leans location for Nevada Smith. Tony Curtis's $15,000, 22-foot trailer is on a split level, with kitchen, bath and dressing room higher and to the rear.
