BA. THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursdey, Mey 12, 1966 tis COMMUNITY POOL ONE OF HIGHLIGHTS OF CENTENNIAL PROJECT UAW Gives Endorsemen To City Centennial Project Chairman of the Central Coun- cil of Neighborhood Assecia-| an extended program, and the At a recent 'meeting of the UAWA General Meeting en- dorsement was given to the Centennial Project -- the addi- tion to the Civic Auditorium on Thornton's road south. The facilities in the addition will include two swimming pools -- one a Canadian Standard Swimming Pool 7514 ft. by 42 ft., the other, 48 ft. by 33 ft., suitable for training of young- sters and crippled *children. The UAWA has indicated its support by donating $5,000 to the public subscription campaign. Following is a resume of an endorsement by Abe Taylor, President of Local 222 of the UAWA: "With the fire we had in 1965 in the Gibb street building of the CRA, the Centennial Com- mittee has pledged to accept a further challenge to go along with the Centennial Pool and have accepted a _ Recreation Centre to go along with it to be built at the Civic Auditorium. The insurance money received from the CRA building will be used in the construction of the new building, but this falls short of the monies needed to carry out this project. Local 222 has pledged $5,000 if passed by the membership ever a two-year period, for this worthy campaign. Once again, the worker will be asked to donate 50c. a week to pay for this project, and I am confident they will come through with fly- ing colors, to make sure this community does' not take a backward step." Following is a statement from Alderman John Brady, Editor ef the Oshaworker: "The Oshawa Civic Auditor- jum has just been paid for by the workers. An achievement that is the envy of all Cana- dians. (1) The UAWA were the first 'to use it when we ratified our last agreement between that memorable occasion, and the hokling of the UAWA Rod and Gun Olub Sportsman Show, one half million of our citizens have used this building. (2) It is the cultural and rec- reational centre for all our citi- zens, adults and children, and their neighbors. IT IS PAYING FOR ITSELF. (2) The burning down of the CRA on Gibb street and the overcrowds at the Boys' Club Pool emphasizes that the citi- zens: of Oshawa have chosen wisely in promoting a Centen- nial Project which includes facilities to replace the CRA, and provides for another pool for all the people. For 50c a week or $25.00 for the year, you can have an addi- tion. to the present. complex which will be used by everyone from 5 to 75. This will be a place for activ- ity for participation which will add to the building where we now sit as spectators. Our. last slogan was "We are building it ourselves for our- selves." Our new slogan is "We need it, let's build it." ceived by the Finance chair- man, from Woodview Commu- nity Centre, Presidem Joseph France. "Always interested in Civic improvement, Woodview Park Neighborhood Association has once again pledged their full support, this time to the Qsh- 'awa Centennial Project. This addition to recreation | facilities will add another feath- | er in the caps of the citizens of | Oshawa. Woodview Neighbor- | hood Association, who operate out of their Community Centre building which was built by pub- lic subscription and many volun- teer workers, know the impor- tance of complete co-operation from the citizeris of Oshawa in this worthwhile project. Wood- view would like to wish the Cen- tennial Committee complete suc- cess in their drive for funds." Following is a statement from Elweed Bradiey, Publicity Following is a statement re- tions: 'The twenty Neighborhood | Parks are patiently anticipating the sod turning ceremony of the | Centennial Project, which will house the new Oshawa Recrea- tion Centre. "Although the building had become inadequate to carry on liability of necessary repairs, it was not until the fire at the Gibb street centre, that one really missed the fulfillment of the facilities. "The many groups which met there each week, have had te keep active in various ways, taking accommodations where they could be found. Centennial Parade Special! SAMSONITE Debonair SET-STARTER Offer!
