a THE OSHAWA TIME, Seterdey, Mey 7; 1966 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR NO ACCOMMODATION! Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens' program, for last night's CAHA Memorial Cup final game, second of the series, between Edmonton Oil Kings and Osh- awa Generals, featured an article by Al Stewart, that was just more-than-a-little on the sarcastic side. It referred to "Bill" Hunter's étatement.that he wanted to get the series over in a hurry and Wren Biair's reply, hat Generals would accommodate him, Then it went on to say, Generals had 'been accommodating enough -- by blowing the first game. ed Iikened the Generals to a mediocre Junior "B'" club, ., ete. He's got to take back a lot of his words for Sun- day's program. Sunday prill produce "the moment of truth". GENERALS made a miserable showing in the first game, they wouldn't want us to alibi it any other way, because these Oshawa kids are just that honest. They re- spect, rather than resent, criticism. This is why they've got as far as they have. They're not great! This they admit -- ' St. Catharines pushed them to a dectding game -- against Montreal, Generals were tremendous -- against Kitchener, they barely made it to the 7th game -- then were terrific. After that came a dull series against North Bay \- the re- _ sult of that was that they almost lost out to Shawinigan, Wednesday night," the Oil Kings made the Generals look like Junior "Bees", But one thing Edmonton forgot -- the Generals 'caught on", they knew it,-- and last. night they came back to form. é LAST NIGHT was'a different' story. Sure, maybe the Oil Kings had relaxed, figuring after. the first game, that they had "a breeze" but they got the message early enough. They got it so 'early, that for our thinking, their manage- ment sent out such players as Hodgson, Myers and Harrison, with no other purpose than to "'slow-down" the Generals. We even felt that Edmonton was guilty of trying to maim some Oshawa players. 'The Generals didn't back up -- and they won' this one handily, However, sitting in the front pews -- we got a message -- and we hope the Generals got the same message. They're not quite big enough to play the crash-bang game with Edmonton and what's most im- portant, Edmonton, with a man in the penalty box, is very ordinary. Oshawa Generals can win the Memorial Cup and Canadian Championship medals if they'll just make up their minds to "take it" -- just a little. Fiery players such as White, Wilkins, Little, Roberts, Cashman, O'Shea, and even Bobby Orr, will do a lot more towards winning this Cana- dian crown, if they hold their tempers and "take if' -- take more roughing than they really should, but still not retaliate, If they can discipline themselves to take the "bad rap' without retaliating, they'll win this title. It's just that simple! THE OIL KINGS play it rough! We say -- let 'em! If the Generals will control their natural --im- | pulse to fight back -- and "take it" -- they'll have the last, | big laugh. If they refuse to draw a penalty -- they'll end up with the Memorial Cup -- and then -- AND ONLY THEN -- they can have their. big, last laugh. Oshawa has some play- ers who are inclined to prove they've got what it takes, they're actually "chippy" and as such they are "fair game" for penalties. If O'Shea, Cashman, Little, Wilkins, Sandford, White (especially) and all the others, will just work at "staying on the ice" -- even if it Jooks -- and it only looks -- as if they're backing down -- they'll 'Kill' Edmonton with penalties. After all -- isn't this the desired goal? If Generals will only "take it" and not hit back -- they'll win the Cana- dian Championship and in the final analysis -- this is their ultimate goal. Oil Kings proved last. night, they are out to rough up our boys and create penalties -- if our boys refuse to retaliate, they'll still be on the ice, scoring the goals that will bring them the championship -- and if they do that -- that's the "biggest blow' they can give Edmonton, Generals are good enough as hockey players, to win the Memorial Cup. We only hope that they now prove themselves not stupid enough to throw it away, by trying to prove a point of "chicken". Generals, believe us now, before it's too late -- it takes more "guts" to stay on the ice ~ than to go to the penalty box. CAMPBELL The Times Sports Editor Oshawa Generals vaulted back into contention for the 1966 Me- morial Cup championship, last night at Maple Leaf Gardens, when they whipped Edmonton Oil Kings 7-1 and tied up the 4-out-of-7 championship final series at one gamc apiece. This was a complete reversal of form, In the first game, th Oil Kings showed all the speed the power, the aggressiveness and the finesse -- last night the Oshawa Generals took com- mand in all of those depart- ments and it was their game. Wayne Cashman drilled home the first goal, less than two min- utes after the face-off and from that point on, Generals were in charge. Billy Heid! made it 2-0 midway through the period and the writing was on the wall. PUTTING ON THE PRESSURE It was Oshawa's turn to put on the pressure. They were skat- ing faster and hitting harder, right from the opening faceoff and gvhen Danny O'Shea scored the first of his three goals, early in the second stanza, the writ- ing was on the wall. n complete reversal of the opening game, Generals were skating faster and harder, they were bumping and mixing-it-up, at every turn. They were in com- mand and before the Westerners could get untracked, monton scored early in the third period and Oshawa promptly struck back with two their next within goes sailing past his citadel.
