The circuit goes into action this coming Sat- urday with the annual Oak Cup Races organized by the PING BAN LIFTED Former Drivers Make Mosport Hum By CHRIS DENNETT ' Of Oshawa Times Staff How to make something hig | out of a stagnant, financial | mess -- this is the problem} that faces the new owners of | el Park, the country's | eading motor-racing circuit, | The challenge is: great, But) the formula for making the cir- | cult into the success it deserves | is already down on paper. The men who have the job of | building the circuit are both) well known in the motor racing | world. | One is Jerry Polivka who for | 12 years was one of the coun- try's leading race drivers; and the other Montreal race-driver Peter Lerch. The pair both recognize the roblems that face the twisty | 5 mile circuit which lies north of Bowmanville. PROMOTION Promotion and new crowd- pleasers will be two of their major weapons. Plans are already being dis- | cussed for laying a drag strip inside the circuit, "Not this year," said Jerry Polivka in an interview," but probably next, We are thinking of laying the strip in the val- ley that runs behind the pad- dock area." This announcement will come as big news to the area's ever- rowing number .of drag race ans, Drag racing is a purely North American sport. It is a_ big ¢rowd puller where ever it is staged. Recently plans for a major strip north east of Toronto fold- éd up. Demand for a local strip will now probably focus on Mosport. At the minute the new own ers, who operate under the fame of Cantrack Publishing Company, are hard.at work on promotion, ALSO BUSINESSMEN "Don't expect things from us, 199 soon," said Mr. Polivka, "We are motor racing enthust- asts; but we are also business- men. : "We don't want to fall into the same traps as the previous Management." Nothing «will probably be ties until after the Player's 200 on June 4, Planned for this 3 as almost definite are: a complete re-surfacing of the paddock area, a new press and driver building in the paddock and the erection of the circuit's . first grandstand which will go up on Turn One, Of major interest to tha race fans will be the news that the no-camping ban. imposed last year will be lifted, The ban was imposed after excessive rodyism and drinking that went on last year on the night before the Player's 200. Before the ban an estimated 15,000 campers were pitching their tents in the circuit infield before a big race day. "We are going to givé the | fans another chance," said Mr, | Polivka, "At the minute we are i negotiating with the OPP over | this, They have a big say tn the ; matter. | "I don't think there will be | any trouble, What we will do is confine the.campers to the yal- ley behind the paddock area. Next year, however, it will need a complete new surface." 1967 too, is the year the new owners are hoping to bring international Formula One rac- Ling to Canada, It is on this formula that the world driver's championship is fought out.
