'(9.30 p.m. Ch. 6) Show Biz Hard Work But Fun, Says Metro Statuesque Brunette By ROD CURRIE NEW YORK (CP) -- Perhaps one of the most erroneous im- ages to come out of Hollywood is that of the glamorous show- girl, the toast of the town, wined and dined by handsome escorts and pursued: by wealthy stage-door johnnies. But for Toronto-born Berna- dette Brookes, a_ statuesque brunette who graces the stage of the famed Latin Quarter, it's all hard-work--but fun. She does two shows a night-- three on Saturdays seven nights a week, parading and posing in the traditional next-to- nothing costumes, with the great plumed headdress. But because she has ambi- tions to be more than just a pretty face and figure on stage, she also takes dancing, singing and drama lessons most after- noons. "It's hard work but it's fun and, of course, it's all theatre experience,"' she said over a cup of coffee during a break between shows. 'But I haven't much of a so- cial life. Occasionally someone in the cast gives a party after ' the late show because that's about the only time we can go to a party." Bernadette, who is young enough not to be shy about her age but keeps it secret, just tips the five-foot-eight minimum height for Latin Quarter girls. She joined the cast last October after touring in a summer stock company of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, She has been dancing almost since she could walk, and was teaching the dance when still a teen-ager in Toronto schools. For a time she was a partner in a Toronto dress shop busi- ness, helping design and model the clothes. ' Her father, Alfred Brookes; is a retired international represen- tative of the United Auto Work- ers union, As with most New York show- girls, she keeps an eye open for an opportunity te get into a Broadway show -- and if the chance comes along she can get out of her Latin Quarter contract with a few weeks' no- tice.
