Quadland, beautifica- tion expert for the American Association of Nursery men, makes the following sugges- tions: "Beautification, to be most valuable, should be planned Whether you are beautifying | your home grounds, neighbor- hood, a street, or a whole com- munity, the best thing to do is to make a preliminary survey. "Where, for example, are your home grounds or commun- ity ugly? They actually may not be exceptionally ugly. Your goal may simply be to make the ad area more beautiful. The steps to achieve this in-| clude; 1. A gurvey of the area. C locations where a flowering tree or shrub that has lovely flow- ers may '"'set off" the location and help to beautify the whole| area. Not only flowers but leaves, barks and berries are beautiful at various times of the year. Plantings should provide for | an attractive effect at all sea- sons. 2. Select the best sites to be beautified, especiaily trose that will attract attention from the largest audience. 3: Try to have all local groups co-operate by contacting ser- vice clubs, garden clubs, others. 4. Once a site is beautified, make sure that ic remains so through adequate maintenance. Proper planting of trees and shrubs at the start will help.
