A brief to Parliament's health | and welfare committee read by | Dr. Jacques Baillargeon of Montreal said abortion can be} condemned on both moral and legal grounds. Therefore the distribution of the devices--for insertion in the woman's uterus--"'should be for- bidden or, at least, postponed until the way they work has) been explained precisely enough to exclude any possibility of abortion." "Every new technique which} is said to be contraceptive should first be submitted to competent medical authorities for approval so as to make sure that techniques, which may at first sight seem contraceptive, will not prove to be, in fact, disguised abortion," the brief said. NOT FOOL-PROOF | It is far from certain the de- vices invariably prevent con-| ception, Dr. Baillargeon said. "On the contrary, according| to several competent authors, what we do know about these devices suggests that it is highly probable that they bring about abortions," he said. The association's case was | built on the question of the| point at which the device halts | the birth process. If the device prevents' the fertilization of the female egg by the male sperm, this is ac-| ceptable contraception. "9 to a Ave. Writing Poetry Pleasant Hobby But Not Protitable By ROBERTA ROESCH "Poets are people who de- spise money except what you need for today," wrote novelist and playwright James M. Bar-| rie. But the readers of this col-| umn who would like to write| and sell poems don't seem to| be against money at all. In fact, they write to me often to ask about opportunities for writ- ing and selling verse. _As the r letters come in, I find myself wishing I could match their eagerness and that I could assure them in the next! day's mail that the path to| Publishing poetry is paved with greenbacks and coins. But in- stead, I have to point out the fact that poetry is not the way to pay off the creditors quickly. HOBBY DESIREABLE No Dealers Please! -- Granulated Sugar better .makers, . So if you would like to make it your pastime because | you are in love with words, here are things to. consider 1, Read and study the work of good poets. Recite the best of wpa you read out loud and me ize some of it. Build up your vocabulary unt | you can paint word pictures that are imaginative and fresh instead of stereotyped. Equip yourself with a rhyming dictionary 2. Build your poems on fresh thoughts or new twists to old ideas. Base them on subjects and themes that have an inter- ba and appeal for many peo- ple. 3. Once you have a fresh idea and a definite feeling about it, mull over your thoughts, as you do other things, until the verse is ready to be born. When that time arrives set down the poem as it comes to you at the mo- ment, Later you can polish and re-work it. 4. When you have revised it and put it into shape, ask two! or three people who are good | judges of poetry to read it and give you their reactions. People who write good poetry or indi- viduals who read a great deal of verse are usually your best critics. 5. When you feel it is ready to go to market, go to your lo- cal library and spend some time reading and studying the magazines and newspapers that buy and publish poems. You ,will find the main markets will be general magazines; daily and weekly newspapers (includ- ing your hometown paper); col- lege, literary and little magazines; religious maga- | zines; and greeting card com- panies.
