TO MARRY IN MAY The marriage is to take place in Westmount United Church, May 21 of Miss Sharon Leigh Crossman and Mr. Robert Allan Mont- gomery. Miss Crossman is CHILD GUIDANCE Poor Reading Retards School Work By GARRY C. MYERS, PhD You may. know the school child in the upper grades or high school who reveals great interest, as in science, in con versation at home or in the classroom. However, he may depend upon wha: he sees or hears for his information. This| child may be a poor reader seldom opening a book to read for pleasure. His strong interest and infor- mation acquires from what he sees in pictures in books or on TV or hears at home or in the classroom is a precious asset But until he acquires more skill) at reading he will be slowed up} in his school learning. Indeed, his seeming alertness at school) may enable him to get by with- out his exerting effort at read- ing. Besides the school child may speak rather glibbly, lead- ing his teacher and parents to overrate his achievement. A mother of five children writes of her eldest son in Grade 6: "He reads very little. He says 'I can't find books on motors and for construction.' We have a good library in our town and a good school system. However, apparently he can't find what he wants or thinks he needs." My reply in part Why not go with your son to the library and help him find | some of the books he wants? | Help him also find some good | magazines on the newsstand} around his interest, subscribing | to a few of them for him. Get him numerous mail-order cata-| logues on mechanical equip: | ment and the lime. He may) also need some special help in reading. SPECIAL HELP I wish more teachers were alert to this type of child. They.| should see a strong reason to} provide special reading help for | him at school and win the par- | ents' effort at securing an able tutor for him. An occasional parent might be able to give him help per- sonally if sufficiently calm and patient. Investment in a tutor} also could bring good dividends. | Besides, the pareni should re- quire this child to read at least half an hour a day from ap- proved sources, other than his school books. This child needs home discip- line whereby he goes at his homework promptly and faith- fully each evening. He's not the kind of child likely to d well at homework in his rocm all alone. It_is fine if one of hic no would have this child do his homework in the parent's pres- ence while he or she is also engaged in serious mental work. During this study period the parent should read with this child some of his harder text assignments and help him turn each paragraph into a few words of his own. He also may need supervision at doing his written home as- signments with willing help available at spelling words he is not sure about or at looking them up in the dictionary. This child is apt to report on some evenings that he has no homework assignment. In this case, his parent should require him to read for a period as long as his homework usually re- quires--not from comics or pic- A New Service Right on Your Premises!
