@ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Soturdey, April 9, 1966 SPORTS MENU By Geo. ii. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR ONE TO GO! Oshawa Generals moved up within one win of the OHA Junior "A" Championship for the 1965-66 season, here at the Civic Auditorium last night, when they whipped Kitchener Rangers 8-2. That score in itself tells a story -- it's been many a day since any team put eight pucks past Gary Kurt, the Kitchener goalie. The true story is that if Kurt hadn't been still sensational last night, the Generals could easily have had 20 goals. The big break came with 17 seconds played in the second stanza when he reached for one of Bobby Orr's patented drives that wasn't actually on the net -- it was a little too high. But Kurt reached up, tried to snatch the bullet-like drive, didn't quite hang on to the puck, and it fell back behind him, into the net. That made it 3-1 and it was all over! Actually, Generals deserved at least a 3-1 lead and more, on the strength of their first- period margin over Rangers and it was only Kurt who kept them from getting it. But with that soft one early in the second, the writing was on the wall. Later in that same period, Generals put on a blitz that completely obliterated Kitchener's defence and that was it! IF GENERALS get the first goal tonight, in Kitchener, it could be all over in four-straight. Somebody opined last night that Rangers would really "comb the Generals" on Saturday night. This is not true -- they've got to win, s0 they've got to stay on the ice and work for goals. If Oshawa gets the first goal, we'll predict that the Kitchener club will panic. Sure -- if they're down two or three goals tonight, in this crucial contest, then they may suddenly decide "game over" and go out to do some plain or fancy physical damage, but when that time comes, if it does, our Generals are smart enough that they'll keep their heads up and avoid same. The Generals haven't exactly got "the bit in their teeth" but we think they've got the message. They're bound for the Memorial Cup finals -- and all they've got to do to make it -- is keep on giving their best. Billy Heindl, Billy white, George Babcock, Chris Hayes, Danny Sandford, Ron Dussiaume, these were the boys that were carrying "the fast mail" for Oshawa Generals. Back behind the blue-line, Nick Beverley, probably Oshawa's most improved player, Chris Roberts, Barry Wilkins (he's. finally reached the desired level) and the rest, they were strictly terrific. Paul Cadieux, who we still think has got something to contribute to this team, was used up front and was sizzling. A LITTLE GREMLIN just nudged our elbow and type- writer and whispered, what about Cashman, O'Shea, Bobby Orr and that guy in goal, Young. HAH! These are the four boys that have carried Oshawa Generals all season and we wouldn't think of admitting it -- if you told them so, they Ri might get swelled heads and turn sour! These four "Joes are the backbone of the Generals! There, we've said it -- and we'll not take it back. But keep in mind, only when they decide to play as a team! Remember last night's first goal --wasn't that a beauty, an epic of teamplay -- and phen everybody on the Generals decides that it doesn't matter who scores -- as long as somebody scores, then we've got perfect team play. Billy Heindl has got it, so have some of the others. Last night was Wayne Cashman's night -- and whatta night! But it could be somebody else's turn tonight and the secret is -- pass that puck.
