Brought to London from Mon- terey, Calif., where his parents now live, the sensitive, 15-year-| old Montreal-born student is hard at work at the Royal Bal- let school, preparing for a ca- reer that may take him to the distinguished Royal Ballet and the dance stages of the world. But Eagling's road to fame appears to be studded with fi- nancial problems. The son of a garage mechanic, he is sup- ted mainly by a one-year ritish Council bursary. Funds for at least another year's train- ing must be found. His teach- ers hope the Canada Council may help--otherwise they may geek funds from patrons in Brit- ain. "T tried to get a Canada > Council grant at the beginning," said the slender, fair - haired schoolboy, "'but I was told I would have to go into a Cana- dian ballet company." His British discoverers, in- eluding Michael Soames, the outstanding ballet performer, would like to keep him in Brit- ain where, they feel, he would have far greater opportunity to launch a career in the great international theatres. Soames, who saw him dance during a San Francisco audition, de- scribes Eagling as having "quite exceptional talent." Wayne was six years old and had just completed kindergarten in Montreal when his parents decided to move their family of four to Monterey, just south of San Francisco. Wayne got a bicycle and started a coin col-| lection. One day he watched a brother and sister perform at a daficing school and he itched to try his own ability. "T tried tap dancing and then jazz and other kinds of danc- ing. Now I want to be a classi- cal dancer. I think the Swan) Lake and Sleeping Beauty bal-) lets are great." To help pay his way across the Atlantic, Wayne sold his bicycle. Now he lives amid the serene pastoral scenes of Rich- | mond Park at historic White| |Lodge, the former 18th-century| lroyal residence that has be- come the centre of the Royal! |Ballet school. For two hours each day he) practises his steps under the guidance of some of Britain's! most outstanding teachers. In a lobby are sketches of ballet scenes and paintings and draw- ings of some of the great per- formers. In one corner is a life- | "jsize bronze statue of Margot | Fonteyn, one of the world's | most brillian ballerinas. In this atmosphere isolated| from noisy, bustling London, of which Richmond now is a bor- other students dream | starry future. But amid the rustle of footsteps and the tinkle of a piano are the sounds of scratchy pens and the es of schoolbooks. The fledgling dancers are| subjected to a rigid British grammar school education, to prepare them for university in case they do not make the grade in their highly special- ized, artistic field and must turn their efforts elsewhere. Between the dance and school- books, Wayne finds his day is full. Occasionally he'll watch television or see a movie at a nearby cinema. He writes home once a week. But loneliness seems no major concern. A British Council official has been appointed as Wayne's " jan" to give him guidance and| assist him over the hurdles. | BELIEVER WORKS ALONE | : ORANGEVILLE, Ont.
