@ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdey, March 29, 1966 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell were: mt nio DIT ---- SPO ON TO THE FINALS! Back a little over a week ago, with Oshawa Generals facing a sixth playoff game in St. Catharines on a. Friday night and a seventh on Saturday, an attempt was made to delay the start of the semi-final round but Montreal Junior Canadiens' management was adamant -- they insisted it siart that very nexi day, Sun- day. Exactly one week later, this past Sunday, no"doubt the Montreal '"'brass" had some second thoughts. Oshawa Gen- erals have performed in phenomenal style since they came right back from a last-minute defeat in St. Kitts, to trounce the Black Hawks 8-1 the next afternoon, in the seventh and deciding game of that quarter-final round. Don't know what the odds would have been but if'a gambling chappie could have arranged an equitable exchange of currency, based on averages, etc., he could have really 'made a killing" by betting that Oshawa Generals wouldn't lose a game in Mont- real. That's how it. came out and in phat a finish! Generals won the first one there, lost back at-home on Tuesday, went right back into Montreal and won again on Wednesday, then climaxed the semi-final series with a flourish, over the weekend. Oshawa blanked the Junior Habs here on Satur- day night, after a see-saw session for two periods in which the result might easily have been decided the other way. But the real topper came Sunday night, right in The Forum, when Generals, trailing 2-0, scored three gagls in 45 seconds, to win the fifth game of the set and end it, at That! DON'T KNOW whether that was really so good or not. The Oshawa Juniors have been positively thriving on hard work 'and a crowded 'schedule -- so maybe the little rest they have so justly earned, might not really help, But it should! After all, coach '"'Bep" Guidolin will make sure that it's not too much of a rest -- they'll have some stiff work- outs this week, getting ready to meet the winner of the Kitchener - Marlboro series. And that semi-final set has sud- deniy gone topsy-turvy, changing from what was beginning to look like a romp for the Marlies, to a real "'if" series, We were no doubt among the majority, when we got the idea that the writing was on the wall, for Kitchener Rangers, when Marlies snatched that dying seconds' goal for a 4-4 tie on Friday night. But the Kitchener Kids had some- thing else to say about that and they scored an impressive 5-3 win on Sunday afternoon, to even the series, at two wins apiece, and a tie. Marlies are in Kitchener tonight and this one the Rangers need to win. They need three more points to win the series. Should they still be tied at the end of the 7th game, then that re-play tie will go back to Kitchener ice, gyhich means that if Rangers can win tonight, they're sure of at least having another game at home, if necessary. PASS THE GLORY! Local hockey fans, now in a tizzy of When Junior 'B' hockey re- turned to Oshawa in the fall after an absence of a dozen seasons, few fans thought it would return-with such a-bang! The bang reached a_ peak Monday night at Civic Auditor- ium when Bob Dickson's second goal of the game with less' than eight minutes remaining brought the OHA Eastern Jun- ior 'B' crown to' the Motor City. Dickson's goal gave Oshawa Crushmen a '3-2 victory over de- fending champion' Kingston Frontenacs, and a 4-2 win in the best-of-seven final series. Following the game, Crush- men were presented with the Red Sullivan Trophy. Dickson's first goal came in the opening period, giving Osh- awa a lead that they held until Dave Balson scored midway in the second. Less than two minutes after Balson's goal, Dickson set up a goal by Jim Booth to regain the! jlead for Crushmen. Kingston's] Mike Babcock tied it again be- fore the period ended. Frontenacs pulled goaltender Johnny Coates with 40 seconds remaining, but a sturdy Oshawa} defence preserved the win.
