JO"S JOURNAL BY JO ALDWINCKLE Women's Editor of The Times It takes only a few hours of extra sunshine on each end of the day and the spring-cleaning fever sets in. Of ""@ourse, with today's frequent vacuuming, cleaning solvents and drip-dry draperies, spring-cleaning is not the onslaught *¥t once was. Still, good housekeepers do like to burrow into clothes closets and turn out '"'catch-all" drawers, so in the 'Weeks ahead husbands can anticipate a pervading scent "of pine or ammonia, TV dinners and short tempers. . What a session it was in bygone days. I can remember 'the maids in my grandmother's home tying kerchiefs over 'their hair and going into the fray with long pall brooms 'and housemaid's boxes full of cleaning equipment. Then 'they proceeded to haul out all the furniture and finally the carpets were rolled, carried outside (how strong those 'girls must have been) where they were hung over a line 'and beaten to death (not the girls, the carpets), The carpet beaters were made of cane; shaped like large shamrocks on long handles and they were bought 'from the gipsies who came around from time to time, 'begging and stealing. If you bought something from them or "crossed their palms with silver', they would tell 'your fortune and bless the house. Much safer to buy a few clothes pegs or a carpet beater and once, they cured imy whooping cough. That's another story. Grandmother directed that I take a turn at the carpet beating because she said it developed the bust. For the Same reason she insisted that I help shake up the feather beds, as they were called. 1 was a skinny child and even at that tender age I think grandmother was concerned about my matrimonial chances. She could not foresee and ,..would never have accepted the boyish figure cult. : Back to the spring cleaning. Please homemakers when + you are turning out out-grown children's clothing pill you * set it aside for Simcoe Hall? Many children are hoping | for something new for Easter and for Sunday School and * they just won't have it unless you drop off your unwear- ables at the Simcoe Street Settlement House, Sometimes ' there's enough hardage in a skirt to make a dress for a little girl and shoes are needed too once the winter boots season is over. Roast Beef And Yorkshire Congratulations to the Old Country Club on its 10th anniversary. The anniversary dinner and dance was a well : organized and most enjoyable event. Mayor Lyman Gif- ford complimented the club on its civic-mindedness and | the good work it alone could perform in allaying the homesickness of the newcomer from the United Kingdom. ; He also told us that his great grandfather had come from ' Ireland, settled in the village of Oshawa and started up a | grocery and general store. A highlight following dinner, was the presentation by Mr. A. V. Walker, MLA, of a provincial charter of in- corporation. Many months and much correspondence 'had | gone into the acquiring of this precious document and it's ; @ tale worth telling. In the first place the powers that be categorically re- fused to accept the name, Oshawa and District Old Coun- try Club. Somewhat baffled and not a little nettled, the members asked said powers to suggest a name them- ves. Two months and ten arguments later they approved @ name and phat do you suppose it was? Old Country Club of Oshawa and District! ~ Now the old club has to be disbanded as such and a ew constitution and new bylaws have to be drawn up 'under the new name. If this was to avoid duplication of Ynitials I hope the OCC will not be confused with the Osh- Camera Centre, the Oshawa Cricket Club, the Oshawa amber of Commerce, the Oshawa City Cartage, the @shawa Cleaning Contractors and the Oshawa Curling Club, to name a few. » Music lovers who did not go to the Civic Auditorium do hear the Toronto Symphony denied themselves a treat. Tt gras quite a social occasion. Everybody and his wife were there and what an ovation they accorded Seiji Ozawa, the dynamic young conductor who produced from his orchestra the sweetest nuances and the greatest depth and breadth the compositions on the program demanded. Sound Treatment Compliments are due to the management for the fine ataging and the acoustic arrangements which were beyond reproach. Mozart, Beethoven, Prokofieff and Gershwin Satisfied a diversity of tastes and after three curtain calls } a standing ovation, the conductor returned the compli- ent by giving us an excerpt from Offenbach's Gaiete Parisienne. The voices of the orchestra sang together with perfect balance and full tonal quality; the epitome . of superb musicianship. If you had been one of the passengers on the 8S France that sailed from New York last week, you would be heading for a big surprise. The ship is due to arrive in Monte Carlo tomorrow and all passengers have been invited to attend the city's 100th birthday celebrations pre- Sidedover by Their Serene Highnesses Prince Ranier III and Princess Grace. Following an evening of festivities there will be a gala dinner at the International Sporting Club, the most famous night club in Monte Carlo, with the royal coupié in attendance. Part of the celebration of ihe anniversary of the founding of Monte Carlo by Prince Ranier's ancestor, Charles III, the visit of SS France will mark the first anchoring of a transatlantic steamer in Monaco's harbor since the marriage of the current prince to the former Miss Grace Kelly in 1956. Ray McLaughlin, formerly of Oshawa, and the late Mr, McLaughlin and granddaughter of the late Mr. George McLaughlin, brother of Colonel R. S. McLaughlin. The bride's father was killed, a number of years ago, in a tragic 'accident on bis north Oshawa farm, "Elm- croft" when he was dynamiting some flintstones. His son, Mr. George McLaughlin continues the name '"Elmcroft"' for his dairy farm at Beaverton. All the members of the wedding party were graduates of Queen's University: the bridegroom, Mr, Paul Anthony Bolce B.Sc., Miss Dorothy McLaughlin B.P.Ed., Mrs. Ronald Good B.N.Sc., Mr. Ron- ald Good, B.Comm. and Mr. Jerome Bolce, B.Sc. Arrangements for another wedding almost fell apart when the youngest member of the bridal party went down with measles. Young Benji Angi was to have been the ring-béearer at the marriage of his aunt, Sylvia Joan Angi - ---- John Hurrie at Maple Grove and the week of the wedding the wretched spots broke out.
