ny B THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, March 10, 1966 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR OSHAWA GENERALS piayed before the second siiaiiese crowd of their current season, at the Civic Auditorium and with the possible exception of one of those early-season scrambly affairs, we figure this had to be at least their second poorest, if not their worst performance of the sea- son. "Peanuts" O'Flaherty may be reckoned by those fans who sat within hearing range, as just another whoop-and- holler guy but he certainly had his young Black Hawks ail charged up for action here Tuesday night. They opened at a sizzling pace and appeared to catch the Generals flat- footed. Either the Oshawa squad went into the game not giving St, Kitts sufficient respect or they themselves were guilty of not having "'come to play", Even in the second period, when most of the scoring was done, Generals were still in lethargy. Germany have a pathetic excuse of a "ganging act" or "powerplay"-- when the other team has a penalty. If the teams are at. equal strength. the Generals can put on more pressure, not always with any better results, but at least keep the puck in the other fellow's end of the rink, most of the time, But as soon as the opposition gets a penalty, Oshawa's power- play results in goalie Ian Young having some of his most anxious moments. By playoff time, we think the Generals should have worked long enough at some definite sort of pattern-passing, that would make them truly dangerous when the rivals have a penalty. We thought this was a glaring weakness on Tuesday night here -- because every one of the four goals were scored while a rival player served a penalty. IT'S DANGEROUS -- in fact, most often, it's "fatal" to lose a playoff game on your home ice. If it had to happen to the Generals, at least it happened early and they've got the balance of the series to equalize. It would. be extremely handy if they'd do the trick right tonight, when they play the second game, up in St. Catharines The third game is here on Saturday the usual 7:15 starting time and then they play the fourth game in St. Catharines, on Sunday afternoon, There's nothing we can say here that will make any difference.
