THE OSHAWA TIM®BS, Wednesday. Merch 2, 1966 INVESTIGATOR Mr. Justice Ivan Rand (above) has been appointed to conduct an inquiry into circumstances of Mr. Jus- tice Leo Landreville of the Ontario Supreme Court. The government has ordered an inquiry into Mr. Justice Landreville's acceptance of NONG shares while he was mayor of Sudbury. Bean Industry Probe Asked By Liberal TORONTO (CP) -- A public examination into '"'every seg- ment of the bean industry in Ontario' was demanded Mon- day after opposition members in the legislature quizzed Agricul- ture Minister William Stewart about replacement of the On- tario Bean Growers' Marketing Board with a three-man com- mittee. John Spence (L--Kent East) cailed for the bean inquiry "'be- cause jor some months the bean inausiry in Us province has been troubied by consider- apie controversy," 2 "This controversy came to & head last week,' Mr. Spence said in a statement, "when the government, through the On- tario Farm Products Marketing Board, appointed a three-man board of directors to replace the ll-man bean growers marketing board." Mr. Spence said he was not defending the actions of the bean growers' marketing board because he could not judge its operations "until the facts are known -- facts that would be brought out at public investiga- tion." He said he protested the "gestapo-like tactics' used in the bean - board takeover last week and said the government "has been secretive about its dealings" with the board. DONE UNDER AUTHORITY The agriculture minister, af- ter questioning from Donald C. MacDonald, leader of the New Democratic Party, and Murray Gaunt (L--Huron-Bruce), said the takeover had been made under authority of the Farm Products Marketing Act. He said there had been "an obvious lack of communica- tion" between the bean board and the Farm Products Market- ing Board. The bean board had not complied with its agreement with the marketing 'board. The farm products board said in a statement earlier that the bean board had failed to serve the best interests of white bean growers in the province. For more than a year it has urged that the bean board separate it- self from its subsidiary, Ontario Rean Growers I td of London The farm products board statement said the bean board had failed to make the separa- tion even though it had prom- ised to.
