Donna London, an attractive blonde singer, will take over as the featured entertainer. If she lives up to the traditions of the Starlite Room,. she will be around for a long time. Geor- gina and Jimmy extended their stay to more than four months and there is good reason to be- lieve that Donna can give them a run for their money. She-has had a unique career as a professional singer with television and nightclub appear- ances in such far-off spots as England, Australia, Hong Kong, Manila, Tokyo, Pakistan and Singapore. Donna appeared on television with the BBC in En- gland, ITV in Sydney and had her own show in Hong Kong. She also had engagements at the Goodwood Park Hotel, Sing- apore and the Copacabana Latin Quarter in Tokyo. The Genosha's downstairs room -- Harry's Hideaway -- has long favored outstanding Rock N' Roll groups, some of which re- mained around for three and four weeks. The trio consists of Romeo Lafrance and his wife, Rose, and Len Leblanc, all of whom have performed in the past with the famous Hank Snow. The forthcoming appearance of The Toronto Symphony Or- chestra on March 9 at the Audi- torium is a happy event that merits the attention of all city and district music lovers if for no other reason than the orches- tra will be under the direction DONNA LONDON of the internationally renowned Seiji Ozawa. The 29-year-old Japanese di- rector has achieved the highest musical honors, won the most coveted prizes for music and received the unanimous praises of audiences and critics on three continents. Said Felix Aprahamian of The Sunday Times, London: "Under Seiji Ozawa, the To- ronto Symphony gave one of the most stunning concerts I have yet heard on the South Bank. After their third encore, when the slim Japanese con- ductor led his players off the platform, he left me as impa- tient as any member of the audience for their second con- cert." William C. Kurelo, the Audi- torium's general - manager, an- nounced this week that the St. Andrew's Society of Oshawa will sponsor the mammoth var- iety show from overseas, "A Breath of Scotland" April 11. The Oshawa stop-off will be part of the troupe's current North American tour and gives promise to be one of the most successful events on the Audi- torium's 1968 calendar. "A "Breath of Scotland' has | wide entertainment appeal not only for Scots, but for all who like top variety entertainment. The show has appeared in Canada previously, but this will be its first Oshawa stop-off and the sponsorship by the Oshawa St. Andrew's Society gives it the right local touch. The Stage Door Lounge of the Hotel Whitby will have the Jim- my Butt Trio back for one week starting Monday. Juanita Smith and Edye.Byrde are fea- tured. Miss Smith is a versatile pianist, with emphasis on Bach to boogie to modern jazz. She also sings. Edye Bryde, an- other femme member of the trio, is a dynamic singer with a repertoire that ranges from Rock N' Roll to Opera. Leader Jimmy Butts is a comedian. The trio is to start a 10-week tour of Canadian hotels, start- ing with the Whitby. The Gold Rush Lounge of the Central Hotel will feature "The Crosswinds" for one week starting Monday. The group, which appeared at the Stage Door previously, features sing- ing arrangements by John Lemme and Dianne Grant. Organ, guitar and drums pro- duce good background for the talented group. Several months of hard work and several thousands of dol- lars have been expended on the full - length production which portrays the Ukrainian's' strug- gle against Communist oppres- sion. The color film réquired the Services of more than 300 City Ukrainians who received no pay, most of whom helped on the production after their regu- lar work. "The Cruel Dawn" was made by an ambitious group known as the Oshawa Ukrainian Film Club. Most of the shooting has been com- pleted. The big job now is to edit the thousands of feet of film and sound track into a two-hoyr production. The film-- much Of the action was shot in nearby Tyrone -- tells of the Ukrainian insurgent army's at- tempts to persuade Ukrainian members of the Russian Army to join the insurgents.
