On Thursday of this week churches began the new sea- son of Epiphany centred around the story of the journey of the wise Men. The message of this season is that Jesus Christ is for all mankind, Canon F. G,. Ongley of St. George's Anglican Church will preach a series of three ser- mons during the Epiphany, at the 11 a. m. services, under the titles, "Searching", "Finding" and "Giving". John Knight, vicar of St. John with St. Simon on Bethnal Green, has one of the toughest parishes in London. Because people won't come to his church, he goes out to find them--in the pubs. With the money he earns there by singing popular bal- lads, he buys paint to dress up his church and make it a more attractive place for people to come. Father Knight started out by running amateur theatricals. He organized a company, composed largely of Anglican clergy, which has performed for prison- ers in grim Wormwood Scrubs jail. Then, although he never had voice training, he took up singing in the local saloons, 2 oe -- see oe & Ma ac FS carol) and Let's All Go Riding On A Rainbow. For the final number Charlie Smithers, the master of cere- monies, joined Father Knight at the microphone wearing a comic parson's outfit. Everyone en- joyed the gag. Father Knight says he'd like to do comedy, too, "but it's hard to find the right vein that would go down in a pub without disgracing me." Hardly anyone seems offended at the vicar raising money for the church in saloons. NO OBJECTIONS "One or two have thought it rather a pity I do this kind 'of thing, but they've made no real objection,' Father Knight said.
