| WINNING STREAE iSPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR READERS HAMILTON'S Junior Red Wings didn't add a thing to the Oshawa hockey fans' and Generals' celebration of New Year's, did they? Currently on a hot streak, Rudy Pilous' crew chalked up their fourth-straight win last night, at the expense of the Oshawa Generals. They did it on the time- worn formula of containing Oshawa's attack with some stout back-checking and diligent fore-checking, holding the Gen- erals to only two goals. Then trailing 2-1 going into the third frame, the homesters unleashed a scorching three-goal rally that swept the league-leaders to a 4-2 defeat. There's no such thing as a good night to lose a game, but last night was more serious than usual, because while they were losing two possible points, Generals found their margin as leaders cut in half, because Danny Grant paced Peterborough to a 7-2 triumph over the Niagara Falls Flyers, up in the Liftlock City. Now the 'Petes' only trail Generals by two points -- and they have a-game-in-hand too! In the only other Junior "A" action last night, Montreal Canadiens nipped St. Kitts 6-5. THE GENERALS get their big chance for a 'Happy New Year's Day" when they play Toronto Marlboros here tomorrow night, at the usual starting time. This should give plenty of time for the turkey dressing to "settle down" and besides, by the time sports fans have watched three or four hours of football action, with all the '""Bowl Games' that are on TV tomorrow the hockey game will give them a chance to rest their eyes. Marlies have -been getting the spurs this past week -- their management is very unhappy SNA ase A devastating third-period at- tack, by the Hamilton Red | Wings on Thursday night, snapp- ed the Oshawa Generals' unde- feated string at six games. Encouraged by 3,827 partisan fans, the largest crowd at Ham- ilton Forum in three seasons, the Wings toppled the league- leaders 4-2. MARGIN IS CUT : Brian Watts, Fred Speck, Gary Marsh and Don Giese- brecht scored for the home- sters, to keep them in a fourth- place tie with Montreal Junior Canadiens, 11 points behind Osh- awa. Generals, meanwhile, saw their lead diminish to two points over Peterborough Petes. | Paul Cadieux and Billy Heindl : scored for the visitors. | Cadieux gave Generals a first | period lead when he scored his {second goal of the season on a | power play. Generals at- tempt to get the New Year off to a good start, on Saturday night, when they host the To- ronto Marlboros at Civic Audi- torium. . . . Starry Wayne Carle- ton is expected to be back in the Marlie line-up. Officials are hoping for a sell-out crowd at the 7.15 p.m. game. They have been un- beatable at home, since the Generals did it, back in No- vember. "CRUSHMEN", Oshawa's very fine Junior "B" team, has been enjoying a long rest, for almost two full weeks, but they swing into some heavy action this weekend. They are taking their "home game" with Trenton 'Apple Kings" into Trenton on Sunday night and then come right back with a game in Cobourg on Monday. Making it three away games in succession, to go to Belleville one week from tonight and then the following Saturday afternoon, they will play Trenton in a "matinee attraction' here at Civic Auditorium, the first of two Saturday afternoon games the Crushmen have carded in their Lakeshore Junior "B" schedule. Coach Ted O'Connor has the boys playing a sparkling brand of hockey and the team is popular with the local fans, a fact, which together with some clever promotional programs, has result- ed in banner crowds for their home. games. BRIGHT BITS -- Oshawa Generals were well-received by the 6,000 Boston fans who turned out to see Bobby Orr in action. Press Box "asides" included, 'why doesn't Emms keep those Juniors here and farm out his Bruins?" The Generals did some sightseeing in Boston and stayed on to see the game becween Bruins and Red Wings, on Tuesday night .. . MONDAY NIGHT, Generals go to Lindsay for an exhibition game with the Lindsay Junior team and Lindsay fans will be on hand to see their hometown member of the Generals, George Babcock, in action ... BOB DIONNE, of this city, early this season, attended a 10-day course, at the CAHA Hockey Leadership Institute, held at Royal Military College, in Kingston, and received his coaching certificate. A former player here and a coach with Oshawa Minor Asso- ciation for 12 years, the Coaches Clinic, which he is to hold at the Civie Auditorium, next Tuesday evening, at 7:30 o'clock, should be well-attended. All boys and adults inter- ested, are invited to attend -- take your skates, a hockey stick and a note-book ... RUSSIA blanked the Czechs 3-0 last night at Colorado Springs, to clinch the big international hockey tournament but the most interesting outcome of the event, so far, is that N.Y. Rangers are seeking one of the Czech stars and Detroit Red Wings have put the claim on a couple of Sweden's top performers -- hoping to make future NHL delivery.
