Success Keynote For City Sportscope By FRANK RATCLIFFE | Sportswriter of The Oshawa Times Success was the keynote for Oshawa sportsmen in 1965. In September, Oshawa Green Gaels became the second la- crosse club in history to capture the Minto Cup for the third straight season. Two weeks pre- vious, Oshawa Italia won the eastern Canadian amateur soc cer title after bringing the On- tario Cup to the city for the first time. Oshawa ' Vikings brought a share of the Ontario Inter- mediate Rugger Union cham- pionship to the Motor City, batt- ling Kitchener Pirates to a scoreless tie in the final game. Oshawa Hawkeyes of the On- tario Junior Football Conference gained a play-off berth for the first time in seven years. The spirited play of Jimmy Higgs carried Green Gaels to a six-game victory over the visit- ing New Westminster Salmon- bellies in a Minto Cup series that attracted a record atten- dance. Higgs was the near- unanimous winner of the Mc- Onaghey Medal as the outstand- ing player in the series. Two other Gaels won awards for their role in the club's 18-1-1 regular - season record. Goal- tender Mery Marshall was awarded the Dennis Mackintosh Memorial Trophy as the league's Most Valuable Player, and the Ross Trophy was given to flashy centreman Gaylord Powless as the player best com- bining sportsmanship and ability. BRILLIANT CAREER The series brought to an end the brilliant junior career of Johnny 'Shooter' Davis -- a eareer that earned him the nick- name 'Mr. Junior Lacrosse'. Joe Kiwior also played his final game in a Gael uniform. Four Oshawa Generals --Ron Buchanan, Dennis Gibson, Bill Bannerman and Bob Kilger -- iclosed out their junior hockey eareers as Generals bowed to Wiagara Falls Flyers in. six games. Buchanan was one of two Generals named to the 1964- 65 all-star team. The other was Bobby Orr, who metted 35 goals to better his own mark for goals by a defence- man. A powerful Vancou- ver Firefighter squad proved too much for the locals, downing them 5-0 at Kinsmen Stadium for the Dominion Challenge Tro- phy. Relying largely on the toe of veteran Terry Kelly, Vikings whipped Peterborough to finish atop the Eastern Division of the Ontario Intermediate Rugger Union. They then blanked To- ronto Old Boys 22-0, setting the stage for the scoreless final. They were outclassed 40-0 by Weston Invictus Redmen in the semi-finals. Don Craggs saw his lacrosse career come to an abrupt halt in 1965. The 25-year-old forward for Brooklin of the Ontario Las crosse Association's Senior 'A' loop was suspended for life by the Canadian Lacrosse Associa- tion as a result of an incident in the Mann Cup final.
