I have had so many explanations that I don't know avhat to believe. My children all had gamme globulin shots and my doctor said the children would not get the disease, but other people say they can get a mild case of it.--Mrs. G, L. C. Hepatitis is a disease of the liver, It. comes from the Greek word hepatikos, or the Latin word hepaticus. Put the "itis" on the end, and it means inflammation of the liver.:A particular type of virus (or rather, more than one type) gets into-the body and it has a preference for attacking the liver instead of some other part of us. Germs are like that. Hepatitis Seen * Common Ailment By JOSEPH G, MOLNER, MD Since the liver performs sey- eral important functions, among them the production of bile, the destruction of red blood cells that have passed their stage of usefulness to us, and the storage of glycogen (or "'blood sugar") in a form which can be readily released into the bloodstream when needed, you can see why we suffer in various ways if the liver "'gets sick." I wouldn't say we know all about hepatitis. We don't. But we know a lot about it, and one thing is that hepatitis is trans- mitted in more than one way. Polluted water, virus - infected goods, and probably personal contact are some' ways. Like- wise a somewhat different type of the virus can enter through the bloodstream, if it gets a Chance, sus we cou |-2--La . | 1---Bewitcned Channei 2--Buttalo Channel 3--Barrie Channel 4--Buftale Channel 6--Toronto Channel 7--Buffalo Channel & TELEVISION LOG 10:00 P.M, l1--The Merv Griffin Show *6-2--Dean Martin Show T--The Long, Hot Summer 6--A Man Called Channel 9%--Toronto Channel 11--Hamilten cerececceamnnmecirann ete THYURSOAY SVE. 5:00 P.M. JAY BECKER Hb record-holder in Ind 1 Championship nan _ North dealer. North-South vulnerable. Opening lead -- queen of dia- monds. Tricks which disappear inte thin air are generally a source of great interest to the bridge player. For a typical example the phenomenon, here is a han from a rubber bridge game. Examine all four hands and it would seem that declarer should lose three trump tricks and a diamond to go down one. But South, warned by the double to expect a bad trump division, not only made the contract but also an overtrick. He won the diamond lead with the king and began an ef+ fort to make as many of his small trumps, by ruffing, as he could, He first cashed the K-A of clubs and ruffed a club. a diamond and ruffed the last club. After cashing the A-K of spades, he ruffed a spade. By this time South had played nine tricks and won them all. His last four cards were the K-8-7 of hearts and a losing dia+ mond, wo East, in the meantime, had only the A-J-10-9 of hearts left, With the contract already as- sured, South now led the nine of diamonds. West played the jack but East was forced to trump it, East had only trumps left and was forced to play one. It made no difference which one he led; South was bound to score both the queen and king and make eleven tricks. All told, South lost two trump tricks. It is doubtful that declarer wrould have adopted this line of play but for the double. It would have been more normal to at- tack trumps immediately in the hope of finding a 3-2 division, South might still have made the hand but certainly not the overs trick. re East's double, questionable ta begin with, put South on the right track. It emphasized oncé again the most important single word there is in the vocabulary of contratt bridge. : Pass, i %--Toronto Today jeopa: fedheney movie 4é--Luncheon Date 4--News ond Weother and Pole 12:15 P.M. of the Meuse 6--Luncheon Date 4--Meet The Millers Movie 2--Mike Douglas Show 1:30 P.M. %--Sergeant Bilko 64--As The World Turns 2:00 PLM. %--Kids Is People 7--The Gator Bowl 64--Password 3--Profile i-Moment of Truth 2:15 P.M. COMMON AILMENT Hepatitis, and this may not be generally realized, is a common ailment. There's no doubt in my mind that a great many mild cases are not even recognized because the patient doesn't feel 'sick enough to go to the doctor. In addition, other people encoun- ter the virus but don't get hepa- titis at all. Still, the gamma globulin particles in the blood (the particles devoted to seek- ing out and combatting disease germs or other harmful ele- ments) .are alerted= by such contacts, and become better watchdogs Therefore when "pooled 1s!milder, sources, is gathered and the gamme globulin is extracted, the gamma globulin contains some particles already prepared to fight the hepatitus virus. If a person gets gamma. glob- ulin, he has, temporarily, a stronger protection. If such a person is exposed strongly to the hepatitus virus, he may still contract the dis- ease, but not as severely. Or if he is exposed only lightly, he may not get it at all. There isn't any way, as of now, which lets us say abso- lutely that gamma globulin will prevent hepatitis, but it cer- tainly helps, and if it, doesn't prevent, it makes an attack You Can Exchange Skates Thet Are Too Small For A New or Used Pair, WE WILL ALLOW UP TO HALF THEIR COST IF IN GOOD CON.
