3 6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Mondey, December 20, 1965 "-Communism's Ma In New Russian Attitude Preston Grover has served 25 years as an As- sociated Press foreign cor- respondent -- in Germany, India, France and the So- viet Union. In 1959-64 he was chief of The Associated Press bireau in Moscow. Then he travelled through the East European Commu- nist countries. Recently he has been back in the Soviet Union and went to Siberia. This is his analysis of Rus- sia today as he sees it. . By PRESTON GROVER t% PARIS (AP) -- There is a trong impression in Moscow = Rmong foreign observers, and many Russians as well, that a "high - water mark has been "oreached in Soviet Communist "Jeadership, especially within the 'country, and that life there will "Shever be the same again. ed Outside Russia, soviet leader- * ship has taken such a battering "an recent years that the old "stalk of "Moscow first' among «party equals has lost meaning. pd The pioneering zeal that swept mmunism from one end of + Russia to the other has largely *gone. The old Communists still feel it but are tired, and many t top leaders are physically ail- ing. Many of the younger ones simply don't feel it. Party pub- lications virtually admit that. Party officials often concede it * in talks with East European colleague 4 even with some Westerners. If there remains any disposi- ~ tion among Russians to build a new frontier it doesn't show up --in that part of Russia phere the frontier is, in Siberia. +. An engineer who has spent «much of his life out there told "this correspondent in Irkutsk *that the whole atmosphere has changed: " "Many young people came out here after the war to make «homes for themselves. Now they 'insist that we build homes for ~ them before they come." *, TIRED OF HARD LIFE The hard fact is that many "Russians are fed up with the 'hard life and are increasingly «aware everybody lives better ,. than they do, except in the "truly depressed countries. *- Disenchantment has set in. The mystique of communism, go which made remarkable ad- "vances in-Russia until recently, «no longer enthrals. It has suf- | {ofered too many buffetings. Looking back on it, it would *" appear the great shock to party *< ascendancy in Russia was ad- 'ministred in 1962. That was the i Aa +¢% MORE'N TWICE AS CONFUSING TEHRAN (AP)--A father of six sets of twins claimed his wife was dead so that he would get the "largest fam- ily" prize, awarded on Moth- er's Day in Iran. But, the Tehran newspaper Kayhan reported Sunday, the mother is still alive. She was divorced by her husband 16 years ago for producing so many twins, the paper said. He didn't get the prize. The mother, Fatima Mo- hebbi, told the paper her twin sister has had two sets of twins. In addition, her broth- er's wife had two sets of twins in four years of marriage. The newspaper report said two of Fatima's brothers are still single "because they are afraid of having too many twins." The largest - family prize went to a farmer and his wife gd 18 children, aged three to 7. stuff, particularly clothes and household equipment, and are} clamoring for a better break. The Russian Marxist experi- ment, 48 years of it, hasn't worked well enough to please} either the Russians or sympa- thizers outside the country. Too be blamed on the weather or on some local official who hasn't done his job. have long boasted that the country has eliminated unem- ployment, every North Ameri- can farmer who visits the big collectives and state farms is staggered by the wastage of trialists find the same true in factories. The surplus of farm labor exists despite a steady flight to the city for a more interesting 2a Gic zat many things that go wrong can't! Although Russian leaders} manpower. Foreign indus-/ gic Gone Pravda, the Communist party newspaper, has reported mas- sive absenteeism in factories and a large labor turnover, in many plants up to 30 per cent year. The paper quoted a steel-plant manager as saying: "It must be said quite frankly that the primary reason for which people change their places of employment is the unsatisfactory pay for labor." LEADERS TRY AGAIN Present Soviet leaders are aware of the slippage, as was Khrushchev before them, and have launched another experi- ment to try to get the economy going better and to improve admipistration. Among the limited number of Russians who meet freely with Westerners these days there is more apologetic talk than in any time in my six years' ex- perience there. They see, and Westerners see, that many things in the Soviet Union ap- pear to reflect failures or weak- nesses that are surprising after all these years. What is really putting the pressure on the party, and on the government, is the persist- ent demand for better things to jeat, wear and read, to ride in, to live in, to sit in, to sleep in. |These things ° have been in |limited supply for years and {they still are. People dress better than they did six years ago but they want still more jand are exerting pressure to get it. People know they haven't made as much progress in better living as have the people in the East European states, which have had communism only 20 years at most. Eastern Europan states 'are getting away from old-style party re- strictions based on the Soviet model. The fight between the Chinese party and the Soviet party has largely wiped. out the remain- ing vestiges of Russia- worship that once was the cornerstone supporting East European com- munism.
