12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, December 20, 1965 THRASHER STEPPING DOWN SP eeine Miset Fina &WLSLUD BIS 4 ASU National Director By KEN CLARK OTTAWA (CP)--The Conserv- atives have a big party job to fill--national director. _ But party people say the real importance of the post will largely depend on the person who gets it. It can either be a position of top-level influence or that of an administrator only. ' After more than two years on the job, Richard Thrasher, 43, is stepping down fo return to Jaw in Windsor, Ont. It's up to leader John Diefenbaker to ap- point his successor. There's no official indication yet who it will be. But inform- ants say that James Johnston, 39, a headquarters newcomer, is a leading contender. Mr. Johns- ten, however, will say nothing about his future. The national director's job, es- sentially, is running the party.) erganization on a day-to-day basis, keeping it in shape for winning elections. The director is a sort of general manager who may or may not be in the inner circle of power. Under him are a couple of dozen permanent head - office employees and a small army of volunteers in the field at elec- tion time. HAS QUIET MANNER Mr. Johnston, short, partly bald, and trimly chubby, has an easy grin and a quiet manner. An economist, he holds three university degrees including his doctorate in economics. A former newspaper man, he wrote for The Financial Post be-| fore leaving to become assist- ant to the publisher of the Strat- ford Beacon-Herald. Later he bought his own weekly in Aurora, north of To- ronto, built up a flourishing \business and sold it a year ago. He had been a constituency party worker for years and joined headquarters in a fairly senior role last summer, just in time to plunge into the election. He has no precise title. Whether Mr. Johnston gets the job of national director or not, the question is whether the Dief- enbaker choice will make the) role what it was under Allister Grosart in the 1957-62 period. SUCCESSFUL DIRECTOR Mr. Grosart took over after) helping 'manage Mr. Diefenbak- er's 1956 campaign to win the party leadership. Then he mas- terminded the 1957, 1958 and 1962 Difenbaker electoral vic- tories. | He was regarded by some as | 1 i } | \one of the most powerful figures in federal politics behind Mr, Diefenbaker. | A grateful Mr. Diefenbaker | rewarded the former advertis- ing man with a senatorship in September, 1962. Dalton Camp, now the party's national president, sat in the Grosart chair for the 1963 cam-| paign which turned the Conserv- | atives out of office and put the Liberals in. Then Mr. Thrasher | |took over. | | He stepped out of the chair) lat Ottawa headquarters in an} junsuccessful. attempt to regain jhis old seat of Essex South in} ithe Nov. 8 election. | Eddie Goodman, a Toronto lawyer, came in to run the na-| tional campaign, then stepped) lright out again. Mr. Thrasher jis back now tying up loose ends 'before departing for good. U.S. Compensates Canada For Tariff-Revision Harm -- WASHINGTON (CP) -- Can- ada and the United States Fri- day signed an agreement desig- mated to compensate Canada for any economic damage suf- fered when the U.S. revised its tariff schedules in 1963. In the 1963 revision, the U.S. juggled the trade concessions it . grants to Canada and 30 other countries. The result was that Canada got more tariff in- creases than decreases on its exports. The new agreement, which repairs that damage, covers 23 items dealing with aircraft parts, fibre building board, pul- leys, game machines, combina- tion radio-TV -and phonograph sets, air conditioners and parts. | In Ottawa, the trade depart-| ment said in a statement the) agreement provides for re-| duced U.S. tariffs on a range | of products ghich accounted) for about $32,000,000 on Cana-| dian exports in 1964. | Refund claims must be filed | before Feb. 5, 1966 with the | 'U.S. collector of customs con- cerned in each case. Suffragettes De Of Male Voters GENEVA (AP)--1n his Alpine the Swiss male has fortified himself against a dangerous for- eign idea--women's votes. His fortress is not impreg- mable. Some dents have been made in it. Suffragettes predict that perhaps by 1970 Swiss women may win the right al- ready granted ladies of Upper _ Volta and Burundi. Since 1919, Swiss men have voted "no" 23 times to projects for their women's emancipation. "Let them be women, they have plenty to do as it is," is the reaction of the average Swiss burgher. Swiss arguments against women's vote are threefold: --Politics will split marriages if-husbandand wife vote for different candidates. --Women. will vote as the clergy tells them to. --Only left-wing women would bother to vote and pretty soon political | | nt Stronghold In Switzerland Switzerland would be sub- | merged by communism. However, suffragettes have made headway. In a 1959 refer- | endum three cantons (adminis- | trative areas) accorded women | the right to vote on local issues. | Oddly enough, there is a fed- eration of Swiss women against | female suffrage. It has vowed | to defend Switzerland against women's vote--"this dangerous | foreign import." j | "The great majority of Swiss | women see absolutely no viola-| tion of human rights in the fact | that they have no right to vote," | the federation said. | | Mrs. Gertrud Haldimann- | | Weiss, president of the federa-| tion, said: "'By obtaining voting | |rights, women would lose their jnatural prerogatives. The polit-| lical_indifferences of a great} number of women would hinder | the functioning of direct de-| {mocracy that we enjoy and| jwould ultimately diminish our! rights." * i prestice | DISTINCTION BEYOND COMPARE * UNDERGROUND PARKING * 124 PARK ROAD Ge@ORGIAN mansions THE ULTIMATE IN LUXURY LIVING!!
