d f + BODY DROP IN THE FINAL ASSEMBLY The highlight of the car's final assembly is the body drop, when the completed, fully-painted car body is lowered on to its proper chassis. This is part of the complex, fast-moving sys- tem that permits auto assembly plants to main- tain such high production. U.S. Truck-builders Grab King-Share Of Big Market DETROIT (AP) -- U.S. tuck- builders grabbed off a_ king- sized share of the motor vehicle market this year. | are | Preliminary indications that a record high . 1,750,000 trucks and buses will have been built when 1965 comes to an end. i The over-all, continued pros- perity of the 'truck - building | business was reflected in sales | figures which showed this | would be the fourth consecutive | year in which more than 1,000,- | 000 units were sold. Before truck sales took off on | the million-plus pace in 1962, there were only three previous years in which 1,000,000 trucks were sold -- 1948, 1950 and 1951. Official registration figures compiled by R. L. Polk and Co., industry statisticians, showed registration in the first eight months this year passed the 1,000,000 mark with 1,003,003 commercial vehicles registered. On that basis, total sales for this year are expected to hit aboout 1,500,000 units, biggest in history. In years past, the truck busi- ness was erratic, with the trend generally seeing sales up one year and down the next. That hes heen reversed, how- ever, and the trucking end of the business has a new stabil- ity. Added to the optimistic out- look are recent great improve- ments in trucks and engines -- economy of operation, greater dependability, more power and greater speeds and increased hauling capacity. The sum total would seem to be a_ greater need for trucks in the immedi- ate future and that is what Detroit is banking on. Chevrolet and Ford are wag- ing a red hot tussle for the No. 1 truck sales spot with Chevro- let in the lead, according to eight-month registration figures compiled by Polk. They showed Chevy had reg- istered 373,335 commercial ve- hicles in that time, compared Dealers Set New Record General Motors dealers in Canada set another monthly record during November when]! they sold 31,004 North American type cars and trucks com- pared pith 17,204 a year ago: In' November 1954, dealer _sup- plies of new cars and trucks were depleted because of strikes at GM feeder plants. Car sales for the period totalled 26,074 for the month of November. It was the tenth con- secutive monthly record for GM passenger sales. GM deal- booming | with 315,903 for Ford. At the comparable point a year ago, | Chevrolet led by a margin of 333,286 to 271,198. On a percentage basis, that meant Ford has increased its share of this year's market to 31.49 per cent, compared with 29.64 last. year. Chevy has 37.22, | compared with 36.42 last year. } mom a ee tar ~~ eee ae | New W alin€ Great Aid F ter parking and _ subsequent starting effects 40,000,000 ve- hicles in Canada and the north- ern half of the U.S. Motor warmers and especially battery warmers are effective, how- ever, the big disadvantage is the need for a place to plug in. To the millions of vehicles park- ing on the street, parking lot, this method of motor or bat- tery warming is unavailable. The ideal would be a cordless warmer -- no plug-in. A Mont- realer, Abe Sternthal, has de- veloped and patented' the world's first cordless battery warmer, "Winterstart." A warm battery acts like a booster from a service station -- a service station truck usually uses a warm battery to start a frozen motor. A warm battery tis the most essential part of cold starting. During the winter of 1962-63 and 1963-64, outside testing on 2,500 cars was carried on. This was done by making these units and putting them on sale in service stations around Mont- real. RCA Victor in Montreal ran tests on winterstart and found that at -10 degrees F a battery could be maintained on its own power (a small two-thirds amp or 8 watt drain about the size of one dashlite) at plus 52 de- 2 Or The problem of outdoor win-. grees F or 62 degrees F above outside conditions. Mr. Sternthal, 31, was in the car business for eight years till 1961 when he sold his used car lot and then spent three years working on the invention. The University of Montreal allowed him to-use the cold chambek for extensive accurate testing. This enabled him to perfect this unit so that it could sell for about $6. . - : Driver In Hurry | During December During this month, a busy one for most people, there will be the temptation to make your own rules about speed limits. It's a busy time and whether you are making social calls or delivering Christmas baskets, you'll be in a hurry. Watch out for the other fellow who is ina hurry too, who will cut corners and step on the gas. Drive so that you can leave the fellow who gets out of. line plenty of room to get back in ahead of you. It's exasperating but it's safer to give way to him. Don't let it get you down -- just feel superior and let him get away with it. It's safer for you. START THE NEW YEAR BRIGHT!
