There has been cancer in my family as far back as my great grandmother, and down to my father, and two of my aunts.--Mrs. L. J. The question is rather diffi- cult, but I can give you a yes and-no answer. Should--you--expect--to--have cancer because an ancestor or relative had it? The answer is no But should you be extra care- ful if relatives have had can- cer? The answer is yes -- for some kinds of cancer. Hereditary is not an all-or- nothing influence. But if your ancestors for 500 years. have had black hair and dark eyes (or blond hair and blue eyes) you are just about certain to be like them However, if both of your par- ents had diabetes, you have a strong chance of it, hut not a certain one. And if only one parent (or only one side of the family) had it, your chance of diabetes is less, Cancer rarely is truly heredi- tary, although in some types there is a familiar tendency." and only occasionally can it be clearly hereditary..-Remember. that there are many kinds of cancer, and they don't all fol- low the same rules. Studies over several genera- tions show that certain cancers tend to appear more often in some families. Cancer of the |breast, cervix and rectum seem to have hereditary tendencies. QUIT SMOKING Yet cancer of the lip (evi- dently caused by chronic irrita- tion) and others of that type show no sign of heredity. Your partner opens the bidding with One Club, to which you respond One Dia- mond. Partner bids. Three Clubs. What would you bid? 2. You open the bidding with One Diamond and partner re- sponds Two Notrump. When you then bid Three Clubs, partner bids Three Notrump. What would you bid now? ; 3. Your left-hand opponent bids One Heart, your partner bids One Spade, and your right-hand opponent bids Two Hearts. What would you bid now? 4. Your partner opens the bidding with Three Hearts: Next player passes. What would you bid now? 1, Four notrump. It looks as though you have a grand slam if partner has three aces, and the best way of finding out about this is by using Black- wood. There is little risk at- tached to the Blackwood bid, since partner is sure to have either two or three aces for his jump bid. If the response is five hearts, showing only two aces, you bid six clubs. 2. Pass. Of course, partner may go down, since your hand is not ideal for notrump, but there is nothing you should do at this point to try to prevent this from happening. You have warned partner against no- trump by bidding three clubs, and you have to accept his judgment that a_ nine-trick game in notrump has a better chance of succeeding than an eleven-trick game in a minor suit. Partner will not be surprised by the singleton. The three club bid warned him of this possi- bility. 3. Four spades. You can't bid less if you have any respect at all for partner's overcalls. Of course, you'd like to have another spade for the jump raise, but despite this, you must still bid game. You shouldn't worry too much about trumps, because the one spade overcall practically guaranteed at least a five-card suit. No good purpose can be served by mentioning either diamonds or clubs. This might complicate the issue and lead to a wrong contract. A three spade bid would also ze improp- er because this would invite but not force partner to bid again, 4. Pass. One of the easiest rules to follow is that it takes two opening bids to make a game, While you have an open- ing bid of your own (weakened, of course, by the misfit in hearts), you also know that partner has much less than a regular opening bid; otherwise, rm m0 Root Wrestling 91 Wish You Were Here @2--The First Look O'Brien J--Bugs Buney Pm 6--King Leonerde 4--Sky King 3--Popeye And Pais 1288 Pa, 9--Theatre $-2--Exploring 7--Milton The Monster 6--Tennesses Tuxedo 4--Adventures of Lassie 3--Whiplash 160 Pa, | 1--The White Hunter ba--The Movies 7--Hoppity Hopper 1--Long John Sliver 7--American Bandstend 4--News 1 Pm a Unlimited | P=Farm and Home Nowe | 1!--OHA Jr. B Hockey 9--HI-Time &-2--NCAA Football &3--Sports Presents 4---NFL_ Football Inter- views aus A House Playhouse 2:38 PM 7--Stan Roberts Show 4--NFL Football 0:08 Pam %--Wrestling 4--NFL Football 5:38 Pm, 7--Buffalo Bilis 4--NFL Football an Pm Aad, Learn aA Play- he would not have preempted. When one identical twin de- velops cancer in some organ, the other twin will do the same in about nine times out of 10-- yet their parents may not have had cancer in that organ. The twins, in such cases, have in- herited a tendency, or a weak- ness, although they haven't in-| herited the disease. | cancer probably will not get For practical purposes, if al number of your ancestors, or family, have had cancer of various kinds, it doesn't mean that you will have cancer, too. Greater susceptibility? Per- haps, yes, And for some particular kind of cancer, as mentioned in the foregoing, you have a stronger chance of developing it, and therefore should be examined a little more regularly.
