In the last two years she has been to Mexico, Japan, France, Spain, Austria, Morocco, South America and Scandinavia. Miss Charlebois is secretary to Pierre Dupuy, commissioner- general of Expo 67, the world's fair to be held in Montreal in 1967. ' She is on loan from the ex- ternal affairs department, for which she has worked since 1958, and has been Mr. Dupuy's secretary since 1959 when he was Canadian ambassador to France. "I was very lucky," Miss Charlebois says. 'I was avail- able when the Paris post was open and I haven't stopped since. I'd recommend the de- partment to anyone who wants to travel." Everything to do with Expo eventually ends up on Mr. Du- puy's desk, she says, explaining 'the excitement of being. secre- tary to the man at the heart of things. "It's very stimulating watch- ing the exposition being built right from scratch and right under your eyes." The Montreal-born secretary gays she prefers the unexpected and dislikes long-term plan- ning. "Mr. Dupuy's trips are never planned in advance. He just drops them on you unexpectedly --that's what makes it so inter-| esting." | While on trips she is kept busy making appointments, handling reservations, answer- ing mail that catches up with them and taking care of itiner- ary changes that crop up. But busy as she is, she has found time to study Italian, hoping that Rome will be the next post when her term with| Expo is over. | Make Ideal Gitts | Potted Plants By ELEANOR ROSS You needn't be a horticulture or handicraft expert to create Christmas gifts that will delight and surprise your friends mho enjoy the fascinating hobby of container gardening. "Even after hundreds of jumps, veterans admit that fear is always present. We all agree this is the element that keeps the sport safe. No one ever gets confident enough to take chances." Even after three months of intensive ground training, which includes written exams and simulated jumps from high tow- ers, the effect of the first jump isstunning, says Miss Mat- thews, 29-year-old native of Lon-! don. ; "I was more frightened than I'd ever been in my life. I got out of the plane all right and then wondered what I was do- ing there. You can't relate the sensation to anything else. You're completely on your own and don't hear -a thing. You don't even have a falling sensa- tion." A parachutist hits the ground with an impact equal to that of falling out a second-storey win- dow but only the 'rush of air past your face' indicates you are hurtling toward earth at the rate of 14 feet a second, ad Matthews says. She took the Edmonton Para- | chute Club's training course for three months early in 1964. It included learning ground rules, emergency techniques and land- ing procedures, for example, how to land if high-tension wires cannot be avoided or if you! come down in a treetop. | MISSED TARGET Miss Matthews put her train- ing to good use on her second jump. She stepped from a Cessna 172 at 3,000 feet and though she tried to manoeuvre | toward the target she missed) and landed gently atop a clump) of trees. | "It's the most safety-con- scious of sports,' Miss Mat-| thews says. "It has to be. The club maintains strict discipline | as people won't jump with) someone who takes chances. He may endanger your life." If a member breaks any of the rules -- not opening his chute before 2,000 feet, for in-/ stances--he can be grounded | for a time. | Miss Matthews, a_ slender | brunette, became interested in the sport when male colleagues | at the office talked ceaselessly about jumping. ..- and to all a good night!
