6A THE OSHAWA TIMES, Soturddy, November 27, 965 50 CARS REBUILT He Works Magic On Antique Autos It's with good reason Ron Fawcett has been dubbed the doctor of antique autos: Just hand him a monkey wrench to work on an old car and he performs mechanical magic which is nigh miraculous. Working aut of his Whitby antique car 'infirmary', Mr. Fawcett has restored some 50 roadsters and buggies since 1950. The oldest was a 1900 Dureay, the first car built for the Canadian market by. Dureay Brothers of the U:S. His "operating room'"' is the backyard-garage of. his home in Whitby Township, near the new Ontario County building. He spends a large part of his day there up to his elbows in grease. And when he's not rehabili- tating antiques he is out on the road hunting them down or scouting for missing parts for his creaky old cars. "Sometimes you gather parts for fixe years before you get started on a ma- chine," says Mr. Fawcett. "Many times you have to trade off a lot to get the right Pieces." Right now his parts - stock amounts to a garret full of hundreds of auto components, from headlamps te fuel pumps. These are stored above his garage operating _foom. , Ron Faweett makes an ad- justment to a mechanism on a red 1932 Packard, one of his latest interests. When Ron buys an antique the first job is taking it apart. Next comes. sandblasting to clean parts, and straightening up BIGGEST FIND Biggest catch to date for Mr. Fawcett is a 1920 yellow Packard, "used as a rum- runner'"' in the upper United States in the gay twenties. Mr. Fawcett says he picked it up in 1953 in Ogdensburg, burg, N.Y., and has put in 2,000 hours on rebuilding the antique, now in exhibiting shape. Mr. Fawcett inherited his mechanical aptitude from his father, Harold, who in turn was the son of the man who had "the first exposed gas pump in Hamilton, Ont., says Ron. His father now has a garage business in Picker- ing. Born in Hamilton, Ron's first antique chore was te restore a 1924 Ford sedan which brought him first-prize at a Stouffville, Ont., show. From there, he settled down to full-time work remodelling antiques. He exhibited in Ontario's first car rally at the Canadian National Exhi- bition in 1953. Now he has six cars on dis- Play with 35 others at the Canadian Automotive Muse- um here, 11 at the Antique Auto Museum in Niagara Falls, Ont., and a whole assembly-line of them in a storage bam five miles north of Oshawa. of kinks, bends and dents. After he reassembles the roadster or buggie, which- -ever it happens to be, he'll take it on a trial to de- termine driving behavior and left-over creaks.
