6A THE OSHAWA TIMES, Soturdey, November 20, 1965 YOUNG ARTIST AT WORK... Dome. Pos BY CHRIS DENNETT Of The Oshawa Times Staff With all the painstaking diligence of a man who loves his craft, a young American artist has undertaken the ma- moth task of painting the in- terior of Oshawa's_ St. George's Ukrainian Catholic Church. Mammoth barely describes the job that 29-year-old Wo- lodymyr W. Baczynsky has undertaken. The young Ukrainian has been at work on the project for over a year -- and his task is only half complete. For the past 12. months the walls and altar have oc- cupied much of his patient brush and pallette. Now he faces the most fas- cinating challenge of all--the huge 100 foot dome which rests high atop the Ukrainian church on Albert St. In this broad expanke he will paint the Resurrection scene. How he will operate over 100 feet above the church floor he does not know yet. "Maybe," he said with a smile, "I'll lie on my back as Michaelangelo did when he painted the dome of the Sis- tine Chapel. HUGE SCAFFOLD "I don't know yet. It will all depend on how comfort- able I feel when I am paint- ing. We are going to have to build a huge scaffold to get up there in the first place. Then I will see what the problems are." The roof of the church will be occupying much of his time for the next few months. There will be canvasses to paint for the base of the dome and four huge triangles of wall which fall away from the crown of the church. In these triangles he will paint pictures of the- four Evangelists, Matthew, . Mark, Luke and John. It will probably be late spring next year before Mr. Baczynsky can leave his tem- porary apartment on Simcoe st. s. and head back to his New York City home. When he goes Mr. Bac- zynsky will leave behind a permanent memorial to his patient labor. In a spare hour from his work last peek the young artist talked freely about his work. 'A church," he said, "is a supreme challenge to any artist. But I think it was the dome that excited me more than anything else about this building. "When I arrived here in the city over 12 months ago the walls were completely bare and white. 'The church's only decora- tion was the huge Italian mosaic you see behind the altar and the stained glass windows which were bought in Germany. EXCITING CHALLENGE "It was a tremendously exciting challenge. Some- LEANING FROM HIGH scaffolding the 29-year-old artist works on huge murals thing, I think, artist dreams of. "TI spent nearly three months just sitting in the church and thinking how these walls could be filled with color and design." Mr. Baczynsky has tackled the whole' church _ single handedly. There have been no gimmicks or short cuts. Every single brush _ stroke has been applied with living care. "TJ am after perfection," he explained. "And perfection takes time. I am not doing this for the money. "If this job was being done on a really professional basis there would be a team of us working here. "But I wanted to do the whole job myself. I wanted to know all the problems of church painting. If perhaps, I am offered another job like this I would probably not do YOUNG ARTIST (Continued on Page 7A) that every behind the altar. Much of the work in the church has been done in gold leaf. Mr. Baczynsky was one of sev- eral artists who competed for the project well over a year ago.
