Scholarship Project Undertaken By University Women's Club VANCOUVER (CP) -- Pianist Andrea alaij modestiy de- clares she's just an "ordinary girl," and the Canada Council apparently believes her. The council has twice turned down her applications for schol- ships. But music authorities in the Soviet -Union and Belgium like her kind of ordinariness. She has won scholarships in arships. But. music authorities in Europe that she first scores asa concert pianist. '\ The 20-year-old beauty has been away from her Vancouver home for the last year, living on a shoestring in Brussels to attend the Belgium Royal Con- servatory of Music. A recent telegram informed Belgian government scholarship expected to provide living ex- penses and tuition until she wins her Diploma Superior in Decem- ber, 1966. Six years ago, as a performer at the International Youth Fes- tival, she was invited to make a tour of the U.S.S.R. During the tour she played at the Kie Conservatory. Delighted conser- vatory directors offered her a scholarship to undertake their five-year program. She did, in 1960, and graduated three years later.
