/ Se ae THE OSHAWA TIMES, Mondey, November 15, 1965 7 2 Escaped Flaming Ship Garbed In Their Pajamas -MIAMI (CP) -- Two bright- eyed Canadian girls, swearing that. never again would they go to sea, told Saturday night how they escaped in their pyjamas from the flaming Yarmouth Castle before she sank off Nas- sau. Perched on the edges of twin- beds in their Miami Beach mo-) tel room, Irene Lengyel, 29, and Phyllis Watt, 27, both of Flin Flon, Man., talked excitedly of the horror they had seen on the cruise that was to have been a highlight of their month-long vacation trip. Wearing borrowed shorts and blouses, they were among the first of the survivors to fly back here from Nassau where they were taken by the rescue ship Bahama Star. : Except for bruises and a few scratches, neither was injured although both admitted they svere badly shaken by the ex- perience of crawling around in the smoke, of seeing a man in a lifeboat beat off a shark with They rushed to the ship's cen- tral hall where people were congregating, "There was no panic," said Phyllis, '"'but everyone was excited and it was all very disorganized." "Some of the crew called out for odd numbers to go this way and éven numbers to go that," said Phyllis, 'but we couldn'! even remember our room num- ber." a COULDN'T BREATHE The fire was in the bow, they said, so they moved towards the stern but the smoke back there was so thick they couldn't breathe so they returned again to the central hall, Throughout it all, they said, there were no announcements or instructions broadcast, but Irene said she had been told the public address system was knocked out as soon as the fire started. Some people then started to! yell, "jump, jump," and Irene} | said she wanted to go overboard but Phyllis: restrained her. an oar, of fleeing down a rope into the sea and finally seeing their blazing ship sink.
