CHILD GUIDANCE Two Syllable Word Games Useful In Learning To Read By GARRY C. MYERS, PhD It's very useful to in réadine words of more than one syllable to see and hear their parts or syllables. Here are some 'good exercises at home: Find or draw pictures of words containing familiar shorter words: dishpan, fish- hook, strawberry, sawhorse, cowboy, mousetrap. For example, with the picture of a dish, and its name under it, and the picture of a pan with its name under it, the child can see that they together make dishpan (which may also be pic- tured). He can put the smaller familiar words together to make the longer word up into the two smaller words in it. Later he can put together or take apart words, one or both of whose familiar parts may not be pictured: blackbird base-|4 ball, overcoat, some- times. Your child may have great fun with you at making up longer words, most of them of two syllables, out of shorter familiar ones. He may have fun naming words which contain the name of two creatures: cowboy, catfish, fishworm, horsefly, cowbird, bullfrog. IT 18 FUN Still more fun, but easier, is for him to make up words con- today, taining the name of one crea-| ture: crowbar, blackbird, saw- horse, moustrap, oxtail, cry- baby, catnip, fish-hook, char- woman, pigpen, earthworm, lightningbug, foreman. Another fascinating exercise with syllables is finding words . whose parts (syllables) rhyme: bric-a-brac roly-poly, bon-bon, namby-pamby, riff-raff, dilly- dally, willy-nilly. Still another good exercise is to -have the child listen care- fully as you say a word of two or more syllables and to tap with his finger for each syllable he hears. At first he should not see the word; later he should. Examples: pond, snowbird, sunflower, camel, elephant, bumblebee, tomorrow, whippor- will, hippopotamus: When he reaches the third or fourth grade and begins to use the dictionary, you may help to see how syllables appear there in each word, and to see that marks tell which syllable or syllables are emphasized, or said louder or loudest. He may be amazed to dis-| cover, with your help, that some) THE STARS SAY ' By ESTRELLITA FOR TOMORROW Try to conquer any tendency toward lethargy now. Much can be accomplished but, if you are careless or indifferent, you could make needless errors which prould offset efforts. Be careful in written matters. FOR THE BIRTHDAY If tomorrow is your birthday, your horoscope indicates that now is the time to make the most of good planetary influ- ences. You are currently in a cycle which should prove most) fortuitous in financial matters, so keep on the alert and make use of every possible opportun- ity to advance along these lines before the end of MARCH. According to the stars, your job and-or business interests should also the child! words with more than one syl- lable have two ways to pro- Inounce them and have twe or more meanings. Examples: rec'ord and record', con'viet and convict', reb'el and rebel'. He will discover that we can often figure out how to pro- nounce these words from the meaning they make in a sen- tence or statement. He may be led to learn from the dictionary how the vowel in a syllable is |sounded, usually short or long. KNOW ALPHABET Before your child begins using a dictionary he needs to know the letters in the order of the alphabet. Until then he hardly will have occasion to know them in this order. How wasteful not to have the child before school or while in the first grade learn the letters in alphabetical or- er. If your child has trouble sounding out unfamiliar or longer words, it may not be wise to stop him as he comes to such a word while reading aloud, and require him to sound it out. To do so may frustrate him in getting the meaning of what he is reading. As a rule, it is better to say the word for him and let him go on. Sometimes, after your child jhas finished reading a para- |graph, page or whole story, it |may be desirable to go back with him and sound out with stumped him. profit then from having you help him sound out a few more jsimilar words. |PARENTS' QUESTIONS him the word or words which!
