The exterior now looks as if it needs to be refinished. 1. Is linseed oil a good preservative for the exterior of a house (the wood siding is imitation log)? 2. Can linseed oil be painted over? 3. Is this linseed oil finish attrac- tive to honey bees (we have bees in one wall)? ANSWER: Linseed oil is OK, but it will darken woods like redwood and cedar consider- ably. It also tends to mildew faster than marine varnish. Yes, you can paint over linseed oil. To the best of my knowl- edge, it is not unduly attrac- tive to bees. Caution: If you use linseed oil, be sure to wipe off all ex- cess after about 30 minutes, and let it dry thoroughly. With- out vigorous wiping, the surface will be sticky. REDWOOD CABINET FINISH QUESTION: I am_ having some redwood cabinets and bookcases built for our living room. Is there a finish that will give the wood a slight shine, and also keep it from turning gray? ANSWER: Exposed to mois- ture and sunlight, outdoors, redwood turns a soft gray: «In: doors, left without any finish treatment, the wood mellows to a slightly deeper tone with the years. Applying one or two coats of clear, dull. white lacquer (kind used to cover wallpaper) to the clean redwood surfaces will f£ause no perceptible change in original color. Beginning at the bottom of the walls, wash working upwards, to pre- vent permanent streaking from dirty. water running down over dry areas. These are practically impossible to remove later. AMP CLOTHES CLOSET QUESTION: We have a large clothes closet downstairs, at a corner of the house (two out- side walls in closet), which be- comes damp during cold weath- er. Clothes left hanging there for a while become musty. How can this be corrected? ANSWER: Wash down all in- side closet surfaces with a mil- dew-proofing preparation, avail- able housewares and marine supplies dealers. The outside closet walls should be insu- lated.
